READ THE BLURB

A fictional story with a memoir overlay as narrator Katie Blake reflects on life in small town America and the principles, influences, and big personalities she wants you to never forget.

It’s Memorial Day weekend, 2009, and the town gossips have their shorts in a twist about a mysterious newcomer who wears tie-dye, colorful headbands, clunky necklaces, and rings on every finger.“Who installs a ceiling fan on a Victorian porch?” cries Ned Boomer, Woodburg’s grumpiest man, and the town gossips concur, “She must be a hippie, witch, or maybe worse . . . a socialist.”

Hell-bent on preventing a neighborhood blow-up, precocious, nine-year-old Katie Blake launches a covert investigation to gather the truth about the enigmatic Rose. But when she discovers a decades-old secret binding her, Rose, and bad-tempered Ned Boomer, her world takes a turn.

Penning a memoir sixteen years later, Katie is forced to reconsider whether the real proof of love was in preventing a neighborhood war or finding friendship and comfort among three unlikely grief-stricken souls who should never be forgotten.

Gram taught me to be independent, manage my anxieties, and have confidence in myself, showing me how to use my imagination to wiggle out of a jam or face the “grim crossroads” when confused or sad.

The first time I cried and lost it over a complicated computer problem, she said, “Be inventive, Katie! What can you do to calm down and think things through?”

We put our heads together to come up with ideas. Gram said she brewed herself a cup of tea when needing a break. Mom worked on crossword puzzles. Dad played solitaire. My one decadent delight was a FatBoy ice cream, and that’s how Gram and I hatched the plan of taking two ice cream sandwiches and hiding them under the frozen vegetables to create my private emergency stash.

“Close your eyes, breathe, take a bite, and replace the leftovers. No one will suspect anything. Our little secret. . .”

At heart, I am a storyteller who writes women’s fiction and stories of courage and discovery, showcasing the protagonist’s journey toward a more fulfilled self.

My passion is writing women’s fiction and exploring the human experience—how ordinary people tackle challenges, endure sorrow and betrayal, wrestle with doubt, and act on their aspirations to achieve flourishing lives. My insight into the power of fiction came during a conference call in late 2017 with a group of fellow life coaches. “What would it be like to help women and men achieve a flourishing life through storytelling?” I asked them.

After that phone call, I got started answering that question. The result was my debut novel titled Blackhorse Road, a compelling story of womanhood and the power of choice, gratitude, and forgiveness, published July 21, 2020, by Coffee Cup Press, followed by Flower Girl (2022), Flawless Witness (2023), and now A Proof of Love (2026)

Before embracing writing fiction, I was the author of health informatics and leadership textbooks. Later, I put my leadership experience to use as a leadership coach, focusing on supporting others to fulfill their leadership and economic potential. My range of nonfiction is available on my Amazon Author Page.

Most sleuths don’t have the advantage of talking to the murder victim for clues, but Saffron has a window into the afterlife. The problem is, she's not a detective and has no wish to be.

In the charming heart of London’s Notting Hill, Saffron juggles motherhood, running an animal welfare foundation, and counseling recently deceased spirits—the invisibles. But her peaceful routine is upended when a spirit insists she solve the mystery of his untimely death. Lucas Troy pops into her awareness claiming he was killed and demanding she figure out who did it. He wants justice before he'll agree to move on. But Saffron's role isn't to play detective, but to help each invisible plan for the next adventure in living. She asks Lucas if he suspects anyone in the circle at his aunt’s tea party where he died. He can’t imagine anyone wanting to kill him, but he persuades Saffron to interview them all.

She feels for Lucas, who had hardly begun his life, and she tries to persuade him that he can have a great future next lifetime, but finally she gives in and agrees to a little investigating. If she finds out something, perhaps he’ll agree to move forward. But the closer she gets to the possible killer, the more she’s in danger. Saffron has no wish to join Lucas in The Room Over There.

Settle in to a cozy mystery with a touch of the supernatural, the heartwarming chaos of family, and the charm of London’s Notting Hill. "Interesting characters, intriguing mystery."

It was glorious to dawdle around the bohemian and vintage shops on Portobello Road, and the addition of rare April sunshine in London made it seem to Saffron like her spa day. Not that she ever got to have those, as most mothers of young children didn’t. But today, browsing and shopping, she indulged herself in a glorious solitude amid the crowds. This busy street was her paradise, and she needed just a few more things for the children’s Easter outfits, but hoping not to find them too quickly.

Traffic and people swirled around her, and she thrilled to the bright colors, food stalls, brushes of music wafting out of open doors. She would forever be a tourist in her adopted city of London. Notting Hill was so like her San Francisco Bay Area, but snootier. In many ways, more exciting.

Peering into windows, she thought about the perfect bow tie she wanted for Percy’s suit, so her seven-year-old son didn’t look like a tiny banker. Four-year-old Freida could use a flower pin for her pinafore dress. Focusing on these ideas was such a pleasure. Saffron tried to wipe the smile off her face, remembering that Londoners did not walk around smiling, though Californians often did.

A passerby jostled her, and as she stopped to check her bag, a low voice drifted down. “Hey! Anyone here?”

Hella damn. An invisible. Another drifting spirit.

“I’m here,” she whispered. “I’m busy, as you can see. You can see me, right?”

“I see a lot of hair. Curly. Are you some kind of animal?”

Saffron huffed. “You’re looking at the top of my head. Come down lower, so you can see my face.”

Some might call it being haunted, but Saffron called it helping invisibles. She wasn’t often contacted by newly dead people, but occasionally one popped into her vicinity. They always needed orientation and comfort after the trauma of dying.

“I could carry you to—” My stomach wretched violently to curtail my words and vile vomit splattered across the floor.

“Poisoned pastries. I should have warned you quicker,” Dornoll half apologized.

My head spun like a tornado as I painfully wretched again, then wiped the viscous slime off my lips. I had bigger issues to deal with than slow poison, as a sinister mass formed in the tunnel ahead.

Dornoll drew her sword while I pulled my Dwarfsteel dagger and whispered, “Thank you, Father, your dagger will go with me to my grave.” Then I added a prayer, “Lord Ashmedei, permit me to die fighting, and not by poison like a sewer rat.”

I felt the heat envelop me as my torso lit on fire and a monstrous aberration entered the chamber, saliva dripping from its hideous maw.

Thank you, Goddess Fish Promotions, for the chance to read Golems of Beithir. I've not yet read the first book in the series, and I know my experience with this book would have been far richer had I done so. It would have been easier knowing who the characters are and the roles they play with each other. Even without this, though, I was able to pick up the main conflicts and the action really pulled me into the story.

There is planty of action, too. I could definitely see this saga on the screen as all of the characters drive the plot in this story.

Even though it took me a little bit of time to figure out the main characters, I really enjoyed my time with them...and want to go back and read the first book before the last book of the series comes out.

four stars for a story well down.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Michal Snaerravn continues on his journey as an explorer of his book writing soul whenever he is not answering the call of the great outdoors. He believes that every prose, song, or poetry we create captures a snippet of our souls. Having grown so much from completing the second book of the trilogy, Golems of Beithir, he is enthralled with the creation of the closing volume, Mist of Akhlys. "Life is too short to idly sit by: pursue your dreams as if your life depended on it. It does."

Books and adventures are meant to be shared—onward and upward!

The epic fantasy opens with “Curse of Ashmedei,” seen through the eyes of Amnon, a young Demonblood hunting for the Druids that killed his parents. He crosses paths with a Company led by powerful Druids and becomes snared in a web of treacherous alliances. His enemies are constantly one step ahead, and only the aid of Cathair, an ancient Lycan who has lost his humanity saves him from death at the hands of Druids, Trollbloods, Trolls, Orcons and their allies. In “Golems of Beithir,” Amnon closes in on his nemesis—Beithir, a powerful Master Druid with dark powers from Hell’s Gate. Beithir stalks Amnon’s every step in efforts to eliminate him and his allies, forcing the young Demonblood to side with the Trolls as they battle the Druids for control of the Hellgard Empire. “The Mist of Akhlys” culminates the trilogy as Amnon confronts his inner self and questions his values of revenge as he is taunted by lust and love…

The release of “Mist of Akhlys” will be followed by a short, free TTRPG Campaign that follows popular structures and mechanics. “The Staff of Amdren” will set in the Hellgard Empire, led by the fearless Warlord Dornoll. Beta testing for Game Masters is available on the author’s website.

When Professor Meridia Vail’s space station is hurled across time and dimensions, she and the rest of the Bridgeway crew wake on an alternate Earth that's only five years into the future but looks like it's a century behind her technology. Their goal is to reclaim their crippled station, return to their dimension, and hope that a mysterious interdimensional illness doesn't kill her and her people first.

Stuck on a backwards version of her own planet, Meridia must deal with governments who want her technology and intelligence agencies who want control. Nobody trusts anyone, and the longer they delay, the closer the Bridgeway gets to a catastrophic reentry.

However, the greatest shock comes when Meridia meets her doppelganger, a brilliant mechanic with a loving family that leaves her heart aching for the life she could have had.

As time is running out for her crew and New Earth, Meridia faces an impossible mission: return to the station, save her crew, and prevent a global disaster. Duty first. Family second. When Meridia is thrust into a situation where the two become synonymous, she must decide how much she's willing to risk for a world she's sworn to save and a life she can never have.

I followed her down the semi-busy hall until we arrived at a first grader’s room. Meridia peeked her head inside, smiled at the teacher, and motioned for a little girl to come into the hall. She beamed when she saw her mother and ran into her arms. When she saw me, she stopped, her dazzling light-brown eyes enlarged.

My heart swelled to the point that my gaze blurred with unshed tears. She was beautiful. She had olive skin and frizzy hair that barely stayed in place with two green barrettes to hold back the curly onslaught. Her smile was perfect, even with the one missing tooth in the front. I didn’t believe in instant love, but this little girl made me feel nothing less than that. Meridia—the other me—had a child. I mean, I knew she had a kid, but nothing prepared me for actually meeting her.

"Who’s that, Mommy?" she asked.

Meridia knelt. "Remember when I told you I had a twin sister who came from space and that’s why the reporters were at our house? Well, this is her. This is Astronaut Meridia. Meridia, this is my daughter Felicity."

The little girl let go of her mother before rushing to wrap her arms around my waist.

"I have two mommies now," she declared. "Best day ever!"

Oh. My. God. It took everything inside me not to cry happy tears. Her little arms spewing with love for someone she had just met was incredible. Who would ever deny this beautiful little girl?

READ THE BLURB

After devoting eleven years of marriage to Ben, her high school sweetheart, and stepping off the corporate ladder to raise their three children, Denise is ready to seize the reins of the career she always dreamed of. But as soon as she commits to step back into the professional world, Ben drops a bombshell that disrupts everything. Suddenly, this once rock-solid couple finds themselves in a battle over ambition, identity, and whose turn it is to shine. As personal choices draw them further and further apart, they must confront their widening rift—a threat to the love they thought was unshakeable. Can they rediscover the passion they once shared, or will their divergent paths pull them apart for good?

READ THE REVIEW

Sworn to Collide, the fourth installment in Maria Imbalzano's Sworn Sisters series, is an emotionally resonant work of women's fiction that explores the complexities of marriage, trust, and personal growth. Although part of an ongoing series, this novel functions well as a standalone, providing sufficient background while rewarding returning readers with the continued presence of the close-knit Sworn Sisters.

The novel follows Denise as she navigates a pivotal period in her marriage to Ben, confronting challenges that test the foundation of their relationship. Told entirely from Denise's perspective, the story nevertheless presents both partners with empathy and nuance. Rather than assigning blame, Imbalzano allows readers to understand the motivations and vulnerabilities of each character, creating a realistic and balanced portrayal of marital conflict.

One of the novel's greatest strengths is its well-developed characterization. Denise's emotional journey is compelling, and the interwoven memories of her relationship with Ben provide meaningful context for the decisions she faces in the present. These reflective moments deepen the emotional impact of the story while highlighting the joys and hardships that shape a long-term partnership.

The narrative maintains a steady sense of tension, making the outcome difficult to predict until the final pages. Imbalzano skillfully examines the everyday choices and larger life decisions that influence relationships, resulting in a thoughtful and engaging novel.

The enduring friendship among the Sworn Sisters adds warmth and depth to the story. Their unwavering support for one another enriches the narrative and will likely encourage new readers to seek out the earlier books in the series.

Recommended for readers who enjoy character-driven women's fiction centered on family relationships, marriage, enduring friendships, and emotionally authentic stories of resilience and self-discovery.

As Ben headed into the living room, the two younger kids shrieked and ran downstairs to greet him before jumping into his arms and giving him huge hugs. Bobby followed at a more reserved pace, but he joined in a hug as well. The noise was raucous as Ben tickled Jennifer and Johnny, riling them up, which was never a good thing when it came to Johnny. He was a cyclone all on his own.

I looked at my happy family while holding a basket of laundry. I couldn’t help but smile at this familiar scene from the past. A lifetime ago.

“Hi,” I said as I passed, heading for the laundry room. No kiss, no hug. Just hi. We had become adversaries who now each had an attorney to help us navigate through the issues inherent in the breakup of a marriage.

He stopped roughhousing with Johnny for a second and caught my eye. “I thought we could all go to the park. Feed the ducks, kick the soccer ball around. It’s a great day.”

Was he extending the proverbial olive branch or just trying to act normal in front of the kids, hoping I would follow his lead? But I couldn’t possibly carry on as if he hadn’t slapped me with his attorney’s letter.

“I can’t. I have laundry to do, and I’m meeting Alyssa for lunch.”

Disappointment curved his shoulders, but I was hurting too. I didn’t want to be reminded about our family life and how happy we’d been. It just made my heart ache more.

SOME STORIES DO NOT END WHEN THE DANGER PASSES.

Beth Clark has not returned to her hometown in decades, since the childhood she survived there nearly destroyed her.

When her estranged mother dies, Beth comes back to rural Alberta for a funeral that feels carefully rewritten. The eulogies are tidy. The past is sanitized. But inside the abandoned bungalow where she and her brother once lived, Beth finds objects that shatter the illusion—and awaken memories of abuse, neglect, and the systems that failed to protect her.

When Beth's younger brother is critically injured in a sudden accident, the present collides with the past. Keeping vigil at his hospital bedside, Beth is drawn back into the summer that changed everything: the violence in their home, the silence of those who should have intervened, and the foster family whose quiet faith offered the first real safety either child had known.

Told across dual timelines, What Remains After is a literary psychological suspense novel about trauma and memory, belief and betrayal, and the long, unfinished work of survival. It asks what it truly means to forgive—and what remains when the truth is finally spoken.

READ AN EXCERPT

Coverville Baptist Church smelled musty and old, like the memories trying to escape the recesses of Beth’s mind. That’s all that remained now of her mother. Like her life, nothing at the church had changed in over forty years. It had simply aged, with splintered oak pews and grubby carpets that had been there when she was growing up.

It was unnaturally quiet in the church, which she remembered used to almost roar after a service with the lively voices of congregants discussing the sermon or what was coming up in their week. Children used to run around, shrieking and squealing in both joy and frustration. Now, it was still. Eerily so.

Beth ignored the stares from the other mourners who had arrived early for the service. When she tried to meet their gazes to say hello, they looked briefly, with pity, before looking away. She stopped looking at people. She had only arrived when she had to so she could find Otto and talk to him before it started. He wasn’t in the lobby. Maybe he was in the sanctuary.

She waited in line at the guest registry, attended to by one of the funeral directors. When it was Beth’s turn, her hand trembled as she picked up the ridiculous feathered pen and hesitated before writing down her name. Should she use her married name or her maiden name? Her ex would have a conniption if she wrote down his, and she was changing her name back anyway, so she entered “Elizabeth Clark.”

When Beth had seen her mother’s obituary on Facebook, she’d realized that, despite her hesitation, she would go to the funeral. The only other attendees were townsfolk—mostly members of Virgie’s church—and family. She suspected that most came out of curiosity rather than grief. Beth’s reasons were less clear. Her hatred for her mother had lessened over the years, but had never completely gone; still, she felt an odd urge, almost a duty, to attend. She told herself it was just an excuse to see her brother, Otto, not the urn.

The scene at Newgate was much different than when they had left only a couple of hours before. The crowd of everyday travelers had dispersed, and de Landys’s men had been reinforced, though a few of them lay on the ground with arrows through their chests. Most of them stood with their backs to Ashley and her group, intent on countering the King’s men, who were heaving against the gate to break it down.

The two knights who had agreed to accompany her paused. Ashley glanced up at de la Garde. “This is your moment, Sir Matthew. Your future reputation will depend on what you choose to do now.”

Sir Matthew set his mouth in a grim line. He glanced at his fellow, who nodded at him. They roared past her and attacked the men from behind, slashing swords into backs and necks. Ashley used the distraction to dash into the gatehouse, where she paused only to slide the torch into a handy sconce on the wall. The King’s men were still tied up. She would have to trust that their loyalty to the King held true. Ashley knelt and used her dagger to cut through the ropes, starting with de Mantel.

“What’s the situation?” he asked as soon as he was free of his gag.

“The King’s men are on the other side of the gate. We’ve reinforced them from inside.”

“You? Are there any fighting men in your reinforceme

“Yes. Two.” The bloody body of one of the traitors fell into the gatehouse doorway. Ashley forced a smile even though the sight made her gag. “See?”

Daon’s fingers twitched. Tap-tap … tap.

The pulse matched him.

Hana’s breath caught. “Daon,” she said, low.

“I know, I know,” he whispered, but he couldn’t help it. The beat slipped out of him like a hiccup. He added a heel-thump, tiny, a heartbeat on the floor.

The bobbing steadied. The little bumps turned into a slow roll, the kind you could ride if you knew when to lean.

Daon leaned with it, eyes wide. “Are you seeing this?”

“I’m seeing you stop,” Noah said.

Mira pressed a new chord, soft and bright. The roll faded. The seatbelt sign blinked off.

Silence fell between them, the kind that wasn’t empty at all.

Hana looked from Daon’s hands to Mira’s keyboard to Noah’s steady grip on the bass case. No one said the word magic. No one said powers. The cabin was full of people, full of cameras, full of ordinary. The last thing they needed was attention.

Daon tucked his hands under his thighs like a kid in time-out. “Okay,” he whispered. “Okay. But did you feel how the bumps synced to me? Like the plane caught the beat?”

“It synced to the pilot,” Noah said. “Like it’s supposed to.”

Mira’s mouth curved. “Maybe both.”

The cart came back with snacks. Crackers. Cups. The clink of ice. The very normal world.
They ate. They watched a cartoon on the seatback screens without hearing it. They tried to sleep.

Hana couldn't. She stared at the little screen map and watched their plane crawl toward Japan. A bright line traced their path, pixel by pixel. She thought of the glow that had raced up the mic stands, and of how her body had hummed like a string in tune.

She reached into her backpack and slid out a notebook. On the first blank page she wrote:
Seoul: power went out – we sang – stands glowed – crowd calmed. Backstage: stands still warm – felt watched – not sure. Plane: Daon’s beat = air bumps? Mira’s chord = calm?
She added a question mark and circled it twice.

His control was precise and deliberate.

“Tariel—” She sucked in a breath, fear slipping into her voice. “What are you doing?”

His lips hovered above hers, so close she could taste the hint of warmth in each breath he released.

“You belong to me,” he whispered, his voice shifting, deepening, curling around her like smoke. His eyes burned brighter, molten gold spilling across the darkness of his gaze. “You always have.”

Everin’s heart thrashed in her chest. Something ancient stared back at her through his eyes—something demanding, something claiming.

She tried to pull away. “You’re frightening me.”

He leaned closer, lips brushing the edge of her jaw. “You love me,” he whispered. “You always have. And you will give yourself to me again.”

His mouth dragged slowly toward hers, teasing, commanding, his breath warm against her parted lips.

“I want you,” he said, low and certain. “I want all of you.”

“No.” Everin gasped, turning her head away as panic surged. “Stop. You’re not—”

His fingers tightened at her neck.

He didn't stop. The Tariel she loved would have.

“I am yours,” he murmured.

She squeezed her eyes shut. Then her voice broke in a whisper—

“You’re not the Tariel I knew.”

The room fell silent. And everything inside her knew she was right.

READ THE INTERVIEW

What is your reading comfort zone?

I’m probably the slowest reader in the world. I enjoy reading a scene and letting it marinate for the next 24 hours. The characters and settings tend to seep into my soul, so I feel every emotion. I love reading ghost stories, mysteries, some thrillers, paranormal, with history and romance mixed in.

How often do you read out of your comfort zone?

I’d say about every third book I read is outside my comfort zone. They are usually books that require a lot of focus, such as historical or nonfiction. I usually read them as research into a project I am working on or considering. Otherwise, I enjoy reading for the escapism.

Can you read in the car?

I’ve never been able to read in a car. When I was a young girl, my older sister used to tell me ghost stories while we rode in the car, which I loved! At one time, we used to travel the Natchez Trace at night to visit my grandparents in the Nashville, TN, area. It was a spooky, lonely drive, and the Plymouth had huge windows. I was convinced that monsters were following us.

What makes you love a book?

What makes me fall in love with a book is the characters. It might be that I identify with one of the characters and what they’re going through; that gets me every time. Or, I might have no similar experience, but can place myself in their shoes and wonder what I would do in their situation.

How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews?

I will never give a bad review. Years ago, I read an editorial in a large newspaper announcing it would no longer write reviews of books it could not recommend. Their reasoning is that every inch of a newspaper costs money to print, and why should they waste it to tell readers to avoid a book?

Even though we have primarily digital reviews today, I won’t waste my time writing a bad review. I’ll simply move on to the next book.

The worst review I ever received, by the way, was for my book, Songbirds are Free, about my ancestor, Mary Neely, and her Shawnee capture in 1780. I relied heavily on diaries and information passed down through the generations. When it was published, a newspaper reviewer wrote that she didn’t believe the story because I couldn’t have possibly had her diaries; after all, people hadn’t learned to write yet in 1780. (Of course, visions of the Bible flashed through my mind.) The book turned out to be my bestseller, year after year.

Most disappointing film adaptation?

Sorry to say it was What Dreams May Come. That book by Richard Matheson was the first book I read in one sitting, and when I reached the last page, I turned back to the first and read it all again. His writing taught me how to end each chapter with the need to turn the page to the next one. The subject matter was unique and truly came to life in my mind’s eye. When the movie came out, I was super excited. However, the movie didn’t carry the same weight as the book and seemed to rely more on fantasy colors as though I’d been deposited into a child’s game. It’s been years since I saw it, and maybe I’d feel differently today if I watched it again.

What would cause you to stop reading a book half-way through?

Poor writing or bad editing. One-dimensional, cardboard characters. Predictable plot.

Do you like to keep your books organized?

Doesn’t everybody?

READ THE BLURB

Padlocked is an epic historical and visionary novel that follows the lives of a group of ordinary people who find themselves in extraordinary, life-altering circumstances as Nazi Germany invades Poland in 1939.

Two foreign photojournalists, an American and a Spaniard, are trapped between armies at Festungsfront Oder-Warthe-Bogen, along Poland’s western border with Germany. It is Hank’s last overseas assignment, and he’s been counting the days until he can go home to North Carolina to be with his family. Rafe fled Spain after the dictator, Francisco Franco, targeted his family. The experience changed him, and he now sees the rise of fascism in Europe as a battle between good and evil. They will find themselves embedded with the Polish, Nazi, and Soviet forces at varying times, forcing them to face moral and ethical decisions in their struggles to survive.

A young woman is separated from her sister in Warsaw as the Nazis encircle it. Agata made a vow that she would return to take Elsa to safety, but soldiers and barbed wire prevent her from entering the newly established Jewish sector. She is consumed with guilt over their separation, and when she discovers her sister was taken by train to a work camp near Krakow, she navigates her dangerous, war-torn country in search of her. Her quest will force her to confront a Hell on Earth to find her.

A young man joins the Jungdeutsche Partei, or the Young German Party. Once bullied as a child, Max’s new affiliations promote him to a position where he can dictate life or death and settle scores. In order to thrive under Nazi occupation, he makes daily choices that legitimize brutality and erode humanitarian principles and scruples.

While they don’t know one another at the start of their journeys, each will make decisions that have the power to transform them and place them on paths that ultimately converge on January 27, 1945, as the 60th Army of the First Ukrainian Front opened the gates to Auschwitz-Birkenau for all the world to witness.

This is ultimately a story about the strength of love, courage, faith, and resilience in the face of unimaginable hatred and obsession with power, and how every decision we make places us further along specific paths.

Max was unprepared for the pandemonium as he stepped outside the building. He supposed it made sense as he could hear the voices from his office even if he hadn’t been able to make out the words. Still, it was jarring to see people who would normally walk with controlled purpose now rushing this way and that, as though the sky were falling. It made him hasten his steps, his heartbeat quickening as he joined the throngs. Many stopped along the way to cheer on the passing army vehicles, but he dodged around them, eager to get his book and get back to work. He didn’t want the soldiers to give his office to anyone else in his absence.

“Max! Max!”

At the sound of his name, he almost hid, thinking his ruse was discovered, but he quickly realized the voice was female. His eyes darted around the crowded faces. After a moment, the horde parted, and Stella rushed through to him.

“They’re on our doorstep!” she shouted excitedly. Her face was aglow, and he wanted nothing more than to scoop her into his arms and kiss her.

But, as others glanced their way, he grabbed her hand and led her to a quieter area. “Stop smiling,” he directed, swinging her around to face him.

“Why?” she demanded.

“They are not here yet. Do you want the Polish Army to pick you up?”

“Why would they? I have done nothing wrong.”

“Oh? Now that they are here and we are locked in a battle with them, you and I are collaborators.”

“Huh! That is not true.”

“Isn’t it?”

“It is not. We knew nothing of their plans to invade. We only know that we like their system of government.”

“And you don’t think they are here to change our system of government to their own?”

“Isn’t it exciting?”

“Stop it, I say. Stop it!” Max wiped his forehead. “What are you doing here, anyway?”

“The shop where I worked closed.”

“Closed? Why?”

Stella shrugged. “Excitement. Fear. Maybe a little of both.” She peered at him, her eyes narrowing. “Why are you here and not in the mayor’s office? I would have thought you’d be very busy there.”

“I am very busy.” He pulled at his suit jacket as if straightening it. “I have been promoted.”

“Promoted! To what?”

“I am now a liaison to the military.”

“The Polish military?”

“Do you see another here?” He waved his hand toward the tanks passing by them.

“What are you doing for them?” she breathed, her brow furrowing.

“English translation.”

“You don’t speak English!”

“How do you know that? I do, actually. And I am on a mission, and you are delaying me.”

“Be that way, then.” She pouted briefly before adding, “What will you do when the Nazis arrive in BÄ™dzin?”

“How do you know that they will?”

She shrugged. “I am hedging my bets.”

“For right this moment, today, I am a military liaison. That is all I know for now.” He waved as though pushing her away. “Now, go.”

As she started to leave him, he pulled her back into an embrace and kissed her. Startled, he thought she might pull away, but she didn’t. She leaned into him, her tongue flicking inside his mouth and her body pressing against him. She smelled of flowers and musk, and he held her more tightly as he inhaled her essence. Then she abruptly stepped back. “Call on me later,” she said, “when you are no longer working your military liaison shift.”

Then she was gone, as if she had never been there; her petite figure disappeared among the taller men and women crowding the sidewalk. He stared in the direction she’d gone, but when he didn’t spot her among the cluster of people, he turned back in the direction of home.

READ THE BLURB

Dan Winter asks his friend, former police detective Michael McLaren, to discover what happened to his wife, Ellie, who disappeared on the third day of the couple's holiday on Bow Island. Dan thinks she was swept away by rough ocean waves. Perhaps, but after three weeks there is no sign of her, alive or dead.

McLaren's inquiry seems to be going along swimmingly until the police suspect Dan of killing Ellie and hiding her body. Now McLaren has to dive deeper for the truth. Was Ellie really swept away or did she disappear of her own volition, perhaps helped by a wildlife expert who knows all the hiding place on the island? Or there's the Chaucer-spouting war veteran who seems eager to help with anything. Or did Dan actually murder her?

READ THE REVIEW

This installment stands among the strongest entries in the series and distinguishes itself by departing from the familiar structure of the earlier novels. In previous volumes, McLaren has typically investigated long-abandoned cold cases, mysteries the authorities had ceased pursuing. Here, however, the investigation is deeply personal: an old friend, Dan, asks McLaren to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of his wife, Ellie, on Bow Island.

One of the novel’s greatest strengths lies in Ms. Hiestand’s vivid evocation of place. Her descriptions of Bow Island are immersive and atmospheric; readers can almost feel the wind off the water, hear the relentless crash of the waves, and sense the instability of sand and stone beneath their feet. The setting becomes more than a backdrop—it is an active presence within the narrative, shaping both the investigation and the emotional tenor of the story.

The novel also benefits from its deliberate pacing. Rather than relying on the rapid reversals and constant shocks common to many contemporary thrillers, the author allows the mystery to unfold gradually and thoughtfully. McLaren’s investigation feels methodical and grounded, drawing the reader into both the physical landscape of the island and the quiet uncertainties surrounding Ellie’s disappearance.

At its heart, the novel asks a compelling question: was Ellie simply swept away by the island’s dangerous terrain and waters, or does another explanation lie hidden beneath the surface? The answer emerges through careful observation, conversation, and persistence, making the journey toward the truth as rewarding as the resolution itself.

READ AN EXCERPT

"What do you think happened to Ellie? I suppose she was killed. I mean, with the sea it would be easy to...dispose of her body, wouldn't it? I heard Bow Island is desolate in spots." Melanie stared at McLaren, her face still holding its color, so there was no sign she would shy from the truth.

McLaren stretched again and grabbed her hand. His hand easily enveloped hers, and he held it as he answered her question. "I don't know how anyone's ever going to discover the truth, if I'm honest with you. I think there are four choices for the outcome. Pick your favorite, and it has as good a chance of being the right closing to her disappearance as any of the other options."

She nodded, waiting quietly.

"In no particular order and giving no weight to any of the scenarios, these are my ideas at the moment. One. She was accidentally swept into the sea and she drowned. Her body might wash ashore later, but until it does..." He stopped as he recalled Scott Forsyth's recitation about bodies, and swallowed before continuing. "Two. She met someone—a friend or one of her potential lovers, doesn't matter which—and was killed accidentally, and the person panicked and rolled her into the sea. Three. She met someone, and this someone murdered her on purpose for whatever reason. Could be robbery. Or there is the fourth choice. She left of her own volition and is living away from Dan, either living alone or with someone." Quiet crept into the room again as the words hung in the air. "Does this help or just complicate the situation, knowing what might have happened to her?"

Jo A. Hiestand grew up on regular doses of music, books, and Girl Scout camping. She gravitated toward writing in her post-high school years and finally did something sensible about it, graduating from Webster University with a BA degree in English and departmental honors. She writes a British mystery series (the McLaren Mysteries) and a Missouri-based cozy mystery series (Cookies & Kilts Mysteries) that is grounded in places associated with her camping haunts. The camping is a thing of the past, for the most part, but the music stayed with her in the form of playing guitar and harpsichord, and singing in a folk group. Jo carves jack o’ lanterns badly and sings loudly. She loves barbecue sauce and ice cream (separately, not together), kilts (especially if men wear them), clouds and stormy skies, and the music of G.F. Handel. You can usually find her pulling mystery plots out of scenery—whether from photographs or the real thing.

In order to save her family, an 18th-century witch entertains suicide, thereby entering a coma-like trance that lasts 300 years. In this magical state, she reaches into the future to guide other people who long for redemption.

England, 1710. Young Alba knows she is a witch, but the term means nothing until her mother is executed for witchcraft. Then Alba enters a trance that causes everyone around her debilitating emotions, just like Alba’s. The trance, which is Alba’s magic, does not appear again until years later when her mentor is arrested and sentenced to death. Panicked, Alba stabs herself in the heart. Instead of dying, she enters a “false sleep” (coma), a state of spiritual consciousness. Hoping to find peace for others, she seeks similar souls in the future.

Germany, 1942: An American soldier is mortally wounded. In his final moment, he experiences the glory of a beautiful life, if only in his dreams. He enters a spiritual realm filled with warm family adventures, metaphysical escapades that are alternately hilarious and horrific, yet always lead away from anguish. Directed by Alba’s unseen influence, Andrew fights for solace, and wins.

Indonesia, 2003: A young American woman on a Western Pacific island must relive an ancient, tortuous journey through a primitive environment in order to redeem the foreigners in the country. Influenced by a power she can only sense in her heart (Alba), Connie seeks a solution of acceptance instead of rejection.

Told with humor and compassion, the heart of the book is the longing to find peace despite haunting failure, and finding joy in helping others achieve the same.

READ THE INTERVIEW

What is the favorite book you remember as a child?

My favorite book as a child was Laura Ingalls Wilder’s These Happy Golden Years, about her romance with Almanzo Wilder in the late 1880. It seems even as a child I loved historical romance! I remember saving my allowance and birthday and Christmas money for a whole year to buy the entire Little House series when I was thirteen.

What is your favorite book today?

That’s a difficult question because I read in a variety of genres. My favorite writer overall is Stephen King. And his novel It is my favorite. I loved the TV mini-series but not so much the recent movies. They went a bit too far from the novel. In romance my favorite author is Jo Beverley and my favorite romance is her Devilish from her Malloren series. The black moment is so black for me I don’t see how they can overcome it. (But of course they do!)

Tell us about your current book in 10 words.

Attempting to compromise herself, Amantha crawls into the wrong bed

E-Reader or print? and why?

I do both. I prefer print—just something about physically turning the pages that I love. But I most often read on planes and so I read on my phone because a big book isn’t easy on a plane.

One book at a time or multiples?

One at a time. I like to savor them one by one.

Dog-ear or bookmark? (don't worry—Librarian Judith won't hold it against you—much)

Always a bookmark, even if it’s an old envelope or scrap of paper. In books with a dust jacket I use that as my book mark, using the front flap for the first half of the book and the back flap for the second half.

When do you do most of your reading?

As I said above, I read the most when I’m on an airplane, but otherwise it’s at night before I go to sleep.

Favorite genre?

Historical romance, of course. And time travel, which I consider an offshoot of historical.

Favorite book to recommend?

Of my own, it’s probably Only Scandal Will Do. Of another author, most likely Stephen King’s 11/22/63 (historical time travel romance!) which I loved!

Re-reader or not?

Absolutely! There are books I’ve re-read a dozen times. I just never get tired of them. It’s like visiting old friends.

Now Amantha must face the fate she’s tried to avoid—marriage to a man who will never love her.

All Rafael Beauregard wanted was a warm bed and a good night’s sleep…but what he got was an unexpected romp with a beautiful vixen and a fiery kiss that left him wanting more. An excellent trade, except now he’s got to marry Lady Amantha, one of the most willful women he’s ever met. So Rafe’s challenge is to persuade her that marriage to him might be the best thing for them both…once he convinces himself.

“Oh, Raif!” She could scarcely breathe now. “That…feels…so good.”

“I thought it might. You’re awful sweet.” His low, sleepy voice sounded odd under the covers. On the verge of asking if he was well, she lost the thought when he lifted his head from her breast and crushed his lips to hers.

All else forgotten, she wouldn’t have cared if the house burned down around them. His lips were hot, insistent. Then he plied the seam with his tongue, softly urged it to part for him. She had no desire to resist and soon he had buried his tongue deep in her mouth. A tentative stroke of her own brought a growl of encouragement, and she abandoned herself to explore his willing mouth. She did things she’d never dreamed she’d do, with Raif or anyone else. And she only wanted more. “Oh, Raif. I never thought it could be like this.”

He chuckled. “How soon you forget, Jenny.”

“Jenny?” Amantha froze, her blood turning to ice in her veins. “Who’s Jenny?” Sudden anger lit a fire in her, and she pushed him away. “How many women were you expecting in your bed tonight, Raif?”

“What?” The sleepiness had flown from his voice. “You’re not Jenny?”

“You expected me to be?” This was a nightmare. They weren’t even married and Raif was being unfaithful to her.

“I didn’t expect anyone in my bed.” He threw off the covers and fumbled at the bedside table.

“What do you mean you didn’t expect me? We had planned this, Raif.” What the devil was the man playing at?

“We?” A match flared as he lit the lamp, the sudden light after the darkness almost blinding her. She put her hand up to shield her eyes.

“What do you mean, we?” He sat up in the bed, rubbing his eyes. “Who are you, sweetheart?”

The voice, now unmuffled, certainly did not have the superior tone of Raiford Tolbert. Slowly Amantha lowered her hand to find a man with dark hair she’d never seen before peering at her.

Dear God, what had she done?
