It’s summer in St. Louis and Mercy Watts is on vacation from her parents. The great detective and his nosy wife are on a cruise and Mercy thinks she’s off the hook for doing any investigating for them. But when a family friend has a fatal heart attack, Dad has one of his famous feelings and orders Mercy to look into it. Mercy tries not to get sucked in. She really does, but she’s her father’s daughter. Soon Gavin’s death leads to a more grisly one, the death of a bride on her wedding day. Can the two be connected? Was Gavin murdered? Now Mercy can’t stop. You do for family. That’s all there is to it.

I'm a huge fan of cozy mysteries, so couldn't wait to read this one.  I'm so glad I did!  It's the first in the series, and I'll be grabbing the next one, hot off the presses.
Mercy is so fun -- smart, sassy, sexy, snarky.  I really enjoyed her.  Loved her folks, other various relatives and friends as well.  While the plot of this story was no slouch, the strength was definitely in the characters.  That's what'll keep most readers coming back for more.
The mystery was intriguing and unexpectedly two-fold. I went into this thinking there was only one murder to solve, but it turns out there were two.  The story leads us all over, with unexpected twists and a rather surprising ending.  I didn't expect the person "who dunnit" to be the one who did!
Ms. Hartoin is a great writer. Her words and descriptions flow and I really was impressed with the book, but it was largely her skill that made this the stellar entry into the cozy mystery field that it was. Well done.
