READ THE INTERVIEW

What is the favorite book you remember as a child?

My favorite book as a child was The Firelings by Carol Kendall, a wonderful, richly imagined story about a village of elf-like people who live beneath a volcano and must find a way to escape before it erupts. The book’s nearly anthropological approach to world-building influences me to this day, though my imagined worlds are completely different.

Tell us about your current book in 10 words.

No problem! Ladder to the Red Star is about: Jack and the beanstalk on a ruined future planet Earth.

What are you reading right now?

I’m getting ready to read The King by J. R. Ward. I’ve been addicted to her vampire series since the first one, so I have high hopes for the newest installment.

E-Reader or print? and why?

This is hard to admit to a librarian, but I do love my e-reader. Before I had it, books were piling up on every available surface in my house and toppling over onto guests at odd moments. Now, my huge library is neatly contained in one hand-held rectangle, except for the really beautiful books that I just had to keep on my shelves. As a bonus, I can now read books with sexy covers in public without getting stares.

As long as you are reading, it's all good. I have an e-reader as well for traveling! One book at a time or multiples?

I read fast, so I often devour a single book in one sitting. It makes for a more intense experience, I think, than picking up and putting down several books over a course of days. If I put down a book, it’s usually because I’m bored, and then I likely won’t pick it up again.

I used to have time to read like that. **sigh** Favorite genre?

My favorite genre is romance. But within that genre there are so many sub-genres to choose from, the question gets harder. I mostly stick with paranormal romance and its relatives like steampunk, urban fantasy, and of course, science-fiction romance. But I’ve been known to read historicals and contemporaries. The one thing all these different kinds of books have in common is that they end happily ever after. That’s what makes them romance, and that’s why I like them.

Favorite book to recommend?

Games of Command by Linnea Sinclair, about a rogue starship captain and the enemy cyborg who loves her. This is one of the best science fiction romance books ever written, in my humble opinion.

Re-reader or not?

I love to re-read books. Sometimes I do it to study a particular author’s technique, but often I’ll find myself falling into the dream of the book and reading for the sheer enjoyment I got the first time around.

What would make you not finish a book?

Boredom. I can put up with a lot of ridiculousness in my reading material, as long as it’s unique or intriguing. On the other hand, a book could have the most intricate characters and themes described in the most exquisite language imaginable, but if nothing actually interesting happens, it’s toast.
