READ THE INTERVIEW

1. What is the favorite book you remember as a child?

I have many favorites, but one book in particular sticks out in my mind as being a special find. I was at my grandmother’s one day and going through a small bookshelf she had beside her recliner, and at the bottom was a hard covered, blue edition of Mary Stewart’s The Crystal Cave. I didn’t know anything about King Arthur, but I started to read the book. It was a little more advanced than my reading level at the time, but I pushed through, loving the story. There was something magical about that book that I love to this day. For years, I didn’t even know it was a trilogy. Shortly before my grandmother died, she gave me that book because she knew it was special to me. It’s one of my treasures on my bookshelf now.

2. What is your favorite book today?

My favorite book(s) are the rigante series by David A. Gemell. I love the stories, and how the characters intertwine in that series. I also loved the way Gemmell wrote heroic action.

3. Tell us about your current book in 10 words.

Fun filled YA action adventure, that will leave you stimulated!

4. What books do you have on hold at the library?

As a boy I spent many hundreds of hours in various libraries. I still love the smell of old books. In fact I think I spent every lunch hour of grade 9 in the school library. It is with great shame that I must admit it has been ten years since I stepped into a library. I’m going to go to my local library this week now…FOR REAL!

5. E-Reader or print? and why?

I’m old fashioned I guess, I still like the paper in my hand. I love the smell, the sound of it when it thunks down on the table, and the way it nestles between your hands (which is different than that “block” of an ereader!). I do have a phone I can read on, but it just doesn’t suit me. I also don’t like the glare when trying to read outside!

6. One book at a time or multiples?

One book. Focus people!

7. Dog-ear or bookmark? (don't worry—Librarian Judith won't hold it against you—much)

I have always treated my books with the utmost respect. No dog ears, book mark all the way, and no creases up the spine! On this note I have a little story I will share with you. I have saved all of my fantasy books since I was a kid, and they grace a shelf in my basement. I always said I would save them for my kids. When my son was about 16 (3 or 4 years ago) I pulled out volume 1 of the Dragonlance Chronicles. I thought It might get him interested in reading as he doesn’t read at all (but my daughter is just like I was….reading all of the time). Anyway, he took the book and I never heard back from him. A month went by, and then two and I asked are you almost done reading it? A week later he returned the book and never said a word to me. To my horror, the book had been ripped in half, down the spine and then taped back together. Let’s just say I haven’t offered to lend another one. (He claimed it just fell apart….*sob*)

READ AN EXCERPT

“His name is James Lacie. Once he was one of the top alchemists in Cassadia. He was highly sought after for his many time-saving inventions and numerous elixirs. At any given time his shop carried wart remover, air fresheners, love potions, and something closer to that which you seek.”

Miss Mia turned back to her mirror and dabbed at her rosy cheeks again, humming to herself. Milo reached to his belt and produced a small leather bag. Opening the pouch he emptied it into the palm of his left hand. A pair of opal earrings spilled forth. “Closer to that which I seek, you say?” he inquired.

“Yes, a chemical fruit that when eaten would unknowingly render the eater susceptible to suggestion. A great party favourite a few years back. The unsuspecting victim would eat the fruit and was then told to cluck like a chicken or act like a coconut. Its effects would sometimes last the duration of a good party.”

“Yes, the gag would be much funnier if the victim was unsuspecting,” mused Milo. “Tell me, where can I find this James Lacie’s shop?”

“He no longer has one,” replied Mia. “It had something to do with a potion mix up. The king’s cousin ended up falling in love with a sheep, as I recall. The royal family was not impressed, and you know how the Chronicle can be when it gets its hands on what it deems to be a front page story. Ruined the man’s career, or so I’m told. Anyway Mr. Lacie has been on the lam ever since.”

  4. Great interview! I haven't been to the library for quite awhile either! With all of the books online, the need is not as great to actually go to a library or a bookstore. Thank you for sharing!
