READ THE INTERVIEW

What is the favorite book you remember as a child?

Little Women. I still have the copy of the book that I had from when I was a child. I loved it and it’s something that I will one day read to my daughter.

Tell us about your current book in 10 words.

Good things can come from the ashes of terrible experiences.

What are you reading right now?

The Troop by Nick Cutter. It’s a horror novel that’s like 28 Days meets Lord of the Flies. If you like creepy stories then it’s a book that you will want to pick up.

What books do you have on hold at the library?

I don’t go to the library. I’m not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing but I believe in supporting authors, so that means going to the book store and purchasing a copy of their book. The last books I purchased recently were The Damned by Andrew Pyper and We Are Never Meeting in Real Life by Samantha Irby. I’m very excited to read them both.

Do you have any bad book habits?

I buy too many books, is probably my worst habit when it comes to books. I’m an addict. I purchase more books than I have time to read so they go on my shelf where I stare at them longingly. I used to tell myself that I would not buy more books until I read what’s on my shelf, but that’s just silly.

E-Reader or print? and why?

Always print. I need to have a book in my hand that I can smell. I do have an e-reader with a few titles on it but I stare at a computer screen all day when I work so the last thing I want to do is relax by staring at another screen. There is just something about having a physical copy that makes me feel relaxed.

One book at a time or multiples?

Multiples for sure. I usually read a fiction and a non-fiction at the same time. I won’t do multiple fictions because I’ll start to get confused by the many characters but I will read multiple non-fictions at the same time.

Dog-ear or bookmark? (don't worry—Librarian Judith won't hold it against you—much)

Book marks. Dog-ears annoy me to no end. I love books and I don’t even like to see them worn out in any way. I have lots of bookmarks and my daughter even made me a homemade one.

Favorite place to read?

My favorite place to read is always in bed, under the covers with a hot cup of tea. I love being warm and snuggly with a good book.

Re-reader or not?

I am a re-reader but only with certain books. I’ve loved Dean R. Koontz since I was in grade 8. The first book I ever read of his was Twilight Eyes, and I’ve probably read that book ten times since then. Some books should be experienced at different points in your life.

READ THE BLURB

There's an evil queen, a demented father, some amateur boxing and a trailer park story. Even a silver fox makes an appearance. Why wouldn't that entice you?

If you are looking for something different from the rest of the books out there, something that might make you question your sanity then you will love this book.

Seriously! The comedic and sassy perspective will make you see things differently, and you may even find yourself laughing out loud. It's a good story and one that I truly believe needs to be told. Period.

It’s dark, raw and takes you to a door that keeps all my innermost secrets. I hope that the book makes you laugh, makes you cry, and inspires you to be the best version of yourself.

READ AN EXCERPT

You see, my father was evil—seriously evil. During his relationship with my mother, he brutalized her and some of my siblings in ways that she won’t speak about to this day. He was often filled with rage and that rage showed in his physical violence. His brutality was never just saved for my mother. He once punched out my five-year-old step-brother; literally punched him in the face. I couldn’t even imagine what that would be like for a small child. Miss B hated him so much that her hatred poured into me from the time that I was just a toddler. She couldn’t stomach the sight of me for the simple reason that I was a part of him.

These aren’t my memories and most of which I know is fragmented, as no one wanted to talk about the man. What I know of him was learned in piecemeal over the years.

He was the kind of man who would rather see you dead than see you leave. I’ve seen several men like that while watching Law & Order. It’s shocking to know that things like that actually happened in my own family. My mom is such a great woman that the thought of her being hurt is a little hard to take at times. When my mother finally decided to get us all away from him, she had to wait until he went to work. Then, she packed up our things and left home. There was no warning; no threats of leaving him. She knew what he was like and she knew it was best to slip out without telling him.
