READ THE CHARACTER INTERVIEW WITH LEX BRANDERFORD

Are you an only child? How many siblings do you have?

I was adopted by the Branderfords. I consider Ariel, Cello, and Bibi to be my siblings. Dominic told me I came from the stars to join the family, but I was abandoned on their doorstep as an infant. They raised me as their own, but I feel like it has more to do with their fear of the Gate. I don’t really belong here.

Do you know your birth parents? Do you want to find them?

Dominic and Martha said they never met the person who dropped me off. Bibi always asks me if I want to go searching for my parents, but I’m not sure. I wouldn’t even know where to start looking. Maybe once I leave this village, I can search for clues.

What’s your favorite book to remember as a child?

I loved to read A Practical Guide to Heran Monsters by Roseweian. It’s not a storybook, but there’s a lot of information about all the monsters on this continent. I’ve studied it for years now since one day I’ll become a Soldier and leave this village.

What book are you currently reading?

I found my copy of Meditation on Intent: A Guide to Magic by Roseweian. I don’t intend to ever use magic, but Ariel wants to be a Mage and hates studying. I figure I can at least learn enough to keep her from hurting herself.

What’s your favorite genre?

We don’t have many books here, so I try to read whatever I can. I’d like to read more adventure stories or learn about places beyond our continent.

Favorite place to read?

There’s a tree near the blacksmith’s shop. It’s probably the oldest thing in the village, but it has so many places to hide. I’m not sure why it’s so relaxing there with all the noise coming from the shop, but it’s where I go to be alone.

Favorite book to recommend?

I’d have to say anything by Roseweian, especially to someone who wants a class like Soldier or Knight. They’ll need as much information as possible if they want to survive.

If you could go back in time for one day, where would you go?

I would go back and stop Ariel from wandering off on her own into the woods. Something awful nearly happened to her. Now, things may never be the same again.

Do you have any bad habits?

I think sometimes people misunderstand me. I don’t try to hurt people’s feelings. I just want them to understand what they’re doing is wrong.

When do you consider it okay to lie?

It’s never okay to lie, especially to someone you love. I tell the truth, even if it gets me in trouble.

What is your hair and eye color?

I have short, curly black hair and light brown eyes.

Describe your facial features?

Bibi tells me I look like the men of northern Eorum, a place far away from here. I have a wide forehead, high cheekbones, and angular features.

What’s your motto or mindset you swear by?

Dominic used to say, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” It’s always stuck with me.

Did you enjoy school?

It can be a chore at times, but I mostly enjoy school when there’s something new to learn. I don’t like having to read the holy scripts over and over again.

When and where were you the happiest?

There was one particular summer evening. I’m not sure why it stood out to me over the rest, but I remember sitting in a tree with Bibi and Ariel. We were telling each other stories and talking about what we wanted to do once we left the village. I can remember every detail, from the scent of a nearby melon patch filling the air to how the breeze felt against my skin. If I could bottle up that night, I’d keep it forever.

Who has had the most influence over you?

Up until a year ago, I looked up to Dominic.

What are your religious views?

The people in this village worship the Goddess of Light and believe in the prophecy that states the world will end one day. I don’t know what to think of it sometimes. There was a cataclysm long ago that caused the Elves to vanish. I think that was when the world was supposed to end, but I’m not sure. It’s hard to say.

Do you believe in the existence of soul mates and/or true love?

I haven’t given it much thought. Ariel would be better at answering this question. She loves reading romantic stories about knights and princesses. I do believe in destiny, so I guess it’s possible.

When do you believe killing is acceptable?

I don’t believe killing is ever acceptable, but that doesn’t stop it from happening.

Who would you die for?

This has crossed my mind a lot lately. I’ll be a Soldier one day, which means I’ll face some life-threatening situations. Dying is always a possibility in the army, but it didn’t strike me until recently just how likely I could die in battle. I would die for my comrades, and I would die for my family. I just didn’t think I’d have to face that reality so soon.

READ AN EXCERPT

“Lex. You need to run.”

Bibi’s voice is low, just above a whisper. She flips her daggers in her hands until they’re pointing away from her body, something I’ve never seen done before. They’re normally used for stabbing – usually in the most treacherous manner possible – and held with the blade facing up, not down.

“I’m not leaving you here to fight that alone.”

“Then you’re a fool. You can’t help me here, and that cursed weapon you have won’t save you. I don’t even know why you’re still holding onto it.”

“I have potions. If you get hurt, I can at least heal you.”

Bibi doesn’t respond, but I can see the muscles in her shoulders and arms tensing as the shadow man regains his composure and goes completely still. She doesn’t sound like herself. It’s as if she’s a completely different person.

The shadow man points his blade high into the sky, and a strange, smoke-like energy begins to wisp around him. Soon, he is joined by two identical shadow men, each taking a battle stance with swords of their own.

“This is not a fight I plan to win,” Bibi says, and that’s when it dawns on me. She’s trying to buy everyone else time to escape from these things.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Dimitrius Jones was born and raised in West Texas, much to his eternal annoyance. Despite this, he first picked up the pen at the tender age of six. His first masterpiece was a page-turner was about dolphins that used eye lasers to kill a hurricane. From there, his life took a few twists and turns, but he always found his way back to his trusty notepad.

His next few projects include a self-help book for those who suffer from low self-esteem as well as a full-length fantasy/romance novel to be released sometime in the future. Dimitrius has always, perhaps unsurprisingly, been inspired by the mystery, tragedy, and wonder of fairy tales.

His goal in life is to constantly inspire, amuse, and shed light into the corners of life we didn't know were right in front of us.
