What is your reading comfort zone?

I love cozy mystery novels and the supernatural—particularly gothics. I don’t like gross-outs or gore. And I’m not a fan of horror, which typically ends on a bad note. There’s enough of that in the world! I want to read hopeful endings (which is why I write cozy mysteries, where the villain is always brought to justice).

How often do you read out of your comfort zone?

I love Stephen King’s writing, so he’s my one exception to my “no horror” rule. That man just knows how to write, and I learn so much from reading him—about how to draw out suspense, about plotting structures, and about character.

How often do you agree with critics about a book?

Lately, not much! A lot of book critics seem to be post-modernists, and I just don’t enjoy post-modernist writing. It seems to have a lot of awful characters in big cities doing awful things, because “it’s more realistic.” Well, maybe it is more realistic. But I can read about those people in the online news, and they are not who I aspire to be. It’s a fallen world, but I want to read about honorable characters fighting for good things – or at least about people who are trying to be honorable.

How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews?

I’m careful with it. I try to give honest reviews, and to be objective. This means letting people know what reading experience they’ll get from the book without giving anything away, and recognizing that the elements I don’t like, other people may love.

If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you chose?

Right now I’m working through Osweald Beara by Colin Gorrie. It teaches you to read old English in the form of a story. In each chapter, the vocabulary and language gets progressively more challenging. Reading it is like decoding a puzzle, which as a cozy mystery writer (and reader) I love.

Here’s how it works. The author suggests you first read the chapter and just try to get a sense of it. Then study the vocabulary list at the back of the chapter and re-read it until you’re comfortable before continuing on. And then, when you get to the point you’re about to give up, go back to the beginning and read it all to inspire yourself with how far you’ve come. It’s a fun and fascinating way to learn a language. So the answer is old English!

Favorite film adaptation of a novel?

Adaptations are tough. You inevitably have to leave things out, and the page doesn’t always translate to the screen. But Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings was remarkable. He and the actors obviously loved and respected the material. They did a wonderful job. I’ve heard they’re talking about doing a remake, and I can’t understand why. It’s perfect.

> What would cause you to stop reading a book half-way through?

Hm. This is a good question, but I don’t have an easy answer. I do DNF books. In fact, recently I DNF’d a highly acclaimed bestselling urban fantasy novel, because it was one of those “everyone is awful and doing awful things” books. I didn’t care what happened to the so-called heroine. Also, the activities described in the book were ugly, and I didn’t want them in my head.

Supposedly, when you read something or see it on film, the subconscious doesn’t recognize that it’s fiction. If this is true—and I think it is—then it’s critical to curate one’s reading. I’ve got enough issues, without adding horrors to my subconscious that aren’t even real!

Stuffing the brochure into the pocket of my navy hoodie, I walked to the window. The gentle blues of twilight streamed through it, making a trapezoid on the museum’s wooden floor.

“Are you hiding something behind your back?” Bran cocked an eyebrow. Now, he looked like an angry Roman general, the trimmed stubble on his jaw more threatening. Not even his jeans and blue button-up eased the effect.

I blinked, sweating. He’d caught me like a kid elbow-deep in a cookie jar.

What is the favorite book you remember as a child?
The House with the Clock in its Walls. I was an awkward kid and I identified with the hero. Plus, the story was just the right level of creepy for a child.

Tell us about your current book in 10 words.
A metaphysical mystery with interactive elements including an UnTarot app.

What are you reading right now?
The Valkyries by Paulo Cuelho. He’s been a big influence on me, alongside Jostein Gaarder.

E-Reader or print? and why?
I go between the two. Ebooks save a lot of space, and you can enlarge the print. But there’s something about paperback—its permanence, the smell of the paper, the rustling as I turn the pages…

One book at a time or multiples?
Multiples. I’ve currently got three going on my nightstand—one non-fiction, one inspirational, and one pure fun.

Dog-ear or bookmark? (don't worry—Librarian Judith won't hold it against you—much).
I prefer bookmarks—though they can be anything. A cocktail napkin. A Tarot card. An old envelope.

When do you do most of your reading?
In the afternoon and evening, after work is done and the sunlight has faded.

Favorite place to read?
I have a little reading nook, which I like for its comfy chair and excellent lighting. But I often read myself to sleep, and find books buried under the covers the next morning.

Favorite genre?
Mystery—either cozy or paranormal.

How do you keep your books organized?
I have them organized by author and subject matter on my shelves.

Re-reader or not?
If it’s a great book, then I’ll definitely re-read it, and likely get something new out of it every time.

But these things can also be excuses to procrastinate. And the best way to learn is to just do it. (We’re not talking about throwing a bunch of money at something you know nothing about. We at the Mystery School understand the power of frugality, which is one reason why these emails are free).

So just start. Stumble. Screw up. It’s okay.

But just start.

Action item:

You know what you’ve been thinking of doing. Baby steps are encouraged, but just start.

MEET THE AUTHOR

I believe in free-will, and that we all can make a difference. I believe that beauty blossoms in the conscious life, particularly with friends, family, and strangers. I believe that genre fiction has become generic, and it doesn’t have to be.

My current focus is my new Mystery School series, starting with Legacy of the Witch. Traditionally, women’s fiction refers to fiction where a woman—usually in her midlife—is going through some sort of dramatic change. A lot of us do go through big transitions in midlife. We get divorced or remarried. The kids leave the nest. Our bodies change. The midlife crisis is real—though it manifests in different ways—as we look back on where we’ve been, where we’re going, and the time we have left.

Now in my mid-fifties, I’ve spent more time thinking about the big “meaning of life” issues. It seemed like approaching those issues through witch fiction, and through a fictional mystery school, would be a fun and a useful way for me to work out some of these ideas in my own head—about change and letting go, faith and fear, and love and longing.

After growing up on a diet of Nancy Drew, Sherlock Holmes, and Agatha Christie, I’ve published over 60 mysteries—from cozies to supernatural suspense, as well as an experimental fiction book on Tarot. Spending over 20 years working overseas in international development, I learned that perception is not reality, and things are often not what they seem—for better or worse.

There isn’t a winter holiday or a type of chocolate I don’t love, and some of my best friends are fictional.

When and why did you first get interested in tarot?

Like so many people, I first picked up a Tarot deck when I was fairly young—in college. But memorizing all 78 cards seemed like it would take a lot more time than I had. To add to the confusion, my first deck was pretty, but not grounded in very detailed symbolism.

But when I went into the Peace Corps, I figured I’d have the time to learn. So I bought a classic deck—the Rider-Waite-Smith—and brought it with me to Estonia. And I did have a lot of time to learn. This was back in the nineties, when the internet was just getting going, and there were all sorts of listservs to join and very, very slow internet connections to talk Tarot on. There was something magical about those clunky listservs and having conversations with faceless people in the void.

Anyway, after Peace Corps, I stayed in the former Soviet Union, which had a mystical vibe of its own. And the more I studied Tarot, the more I fell down the wormhole of western esotericism. It turns out Tarot has connections to neo-platonism, alchemy, Grail myth… Basically if some western mystic or magician dreamed it up, there’s probably a Tarot connection. And this led to a weird point in my Tarot learning where I was aware of too many different card meanings—it became impossible to read. Which meaning to choose? I was overwhelmed. And then, somehow, everything came together, and my readings began to flow more intuitively. Now reading Tarot is second nature.

And I’ve collected a stupid number of Tarot decks. I keep telling myself this one is the absolute last. But then a Tarot creator will produce something new, and I’m lost. But the art’s lovely, and the symbols are powerful, so I regret nothing!

She studied the paper heart for a long moment, then took it into her study and stuck it with a magnet to the whiteboard there, beside the others. The hearts formed two rows, lined up in order received:

When the first heart had arrived, she’d shrugged it off. At the second’s arrival, Riga had been irritated enough to dust for prints.

There weren’t any.

By the fourth, she’d rigged a discreet camera to watch her door. But when she reviewed the tape, all she saw was an empty doormat, followed by a quick blip of electrical snow, and in the next shot the valentine was there.

Next, she’d placed a camera against the peep hole in her door. The view from the fisheye didn’t reach the doormat, but it would capture anyone who came near. Valentine number five arrived, and there was nothing on the tape – not even a blip of white noise.

She couldn’t magically ward the hall, because her neighbor used it too. Magic couldn’t solve everything – not that she hadn’t tried. Her attempts to use the valentines to magically reveal her stalker had failed. It was as if he didn’t exist.

The construction paper was a common brand. Schoolchildren used it. She’d called in a favor and had the ink analyzed. It was from a normal felt-tip pen. There was only one anomaly. The smudges of dirt on each valentine came from a local park.

It was driving her batty.

I stared down at an antique traveling chest, fit for the maiden voyage of the Queen Mary. The trunk’s leather straps lay undone on the hardwood floor. A sticker with a number and barcode had been loosely affixed to the top, and I checked my catalog.

“Please.” He rolled his eyes. “You’d be a fool to buy anything without thoroughly examining it first.” Herb lifted the lid.

I’d like to say I had a premonition, a foreboding. But I didn’t even feel a quiver of remorse as I leaned forward, like a rube, to peer inside.

His skin had a parboiled look. He was naked, and looked like something out of an old horror film, his horns curving backward like a mountain goat’s. She learned later that laughter is a normal reaction to the Devil. But at the time, she just figured things had gone very wrong.

Three days earlier, she’d received a letter from an elderly magician requesting her appearance in Doyle.

Harper pointed and brushed her long, dark hair off her shoulder.

A slender woman, eyes open and sightless, lay on her back beneath an owl box. A pool of blood had formed around her head in the soft earth. Beside her, a chihuahua barked at us hysterically.

Bile rose in my throat. I pressed the back of my hand to my mouth. I thought I’d been prepared. But nothing can really prepare you for sudden death.

“Do you think she tripped and fell?” Harper said, pointing to the rock half-hidden beneath Bernadette’s spill of hair.

“Maybe,” I croaked, my mouth dry. Bruises darkened the skin above the collar of her cocktail dress, and there was a reddish mark on her face. They didn’t look like they’d come from a fall. “Did you call the police?”

“Of course I did. They’ll be here any minute. I just…” She pressed her hands to her stomach. “It’s Bernadette, one of Adele’s oldest friends, her bridesmaid.”

Lead weighted my gut. This was awful. Worse than awful. How were we going to tell Adele?

If there’s anything worse than walking in on your parents in the throes of disposing of a body, I don’t want to know what it is.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Earlier that day, unaware of the disaster unfolding, I bent my head toward my reception desk and pretended this was a normal day.

“Susan,” Arsen said gently.

I drew careful diagonal lines through the completed tasks in my planner.

“Susan,” my boyfriend said again. “Now you’re starting to freak me out.”

At my feet, Bailey woofed in agreement. The aging beagle sat on my sneaker to punctuate his argument.

I set down ruler and pencil and straightened in the creaky swivel chair. “What am I supposed to do? My two ex-jailers are arriving any minute. They’re going to be watching me like hawks. Any signs of weakness, and…”
