CHAT WITH THE AUTHOR

1.         What is the favorite book you remember as a child?

When I was growing up, I couldn’t get enough of The Little Engine That Could. I would have my mom read it to me every day; sometimes twice a day. “I think I can. I think I can.”

2.         What is your favorite book today?

Stephen King’s IT. I just love the characters and how they all bonded together. They even stayed a pack after they all grew up and moved away; came back to Derry to fight the evil that terrified them as children.

3.         Tell us about your current book in 10 words.

People are dying from an outbreak of nightmares.

4.         What are you reading right now?

I’m reading Stephen King’s 11/22/63. This book is amazing. He uses some of the characters from his book IT when he speaks about Derry.  I’m also reading Book IV of The Dark Towers.

5.         What books do you have on hold at the library?

I’m not a library kind of person. If I like an author, I buy his/her work and read it; helping to support their writing career. Authors don’t get paid when their books get checked out at the library.

6.         Do you have any bad book habits?

Yes, I have a bad habit of start reading a book and before I’m halfway through, I start reading another. I guess I get impatient with finishing one before starting something that sounds good.

7.         E-Reader or print? and why?

I’ll tell you, there’s nothing like feeling a physical book in your hands; turning page after page. Placing a book mark where you left off. But these days I would have to say E-Reader. They are less expensive than print books, and I don’t have a clutter of books on shelves.

8.         One book at a time or multiples?

I would have to say multiples. I’m just too impatient to stay on one book.

9.         Dog-ear or bookmark? (don't worry—Librarian Judith won't hold it against you—much)

This is something my wife and I argue about all the time. I baby my books. I would never think about folding a corner of a page. When I’m reading, I try not to stress the binder; opening the book just wide enough to read every word. My wife on other hand doesn’t care. She’ll fold the bottom of the page or she might fold the top on her next break from reading. This bugs me and makes me not want to loan her my books.

10.       Least favorite book you've read this year?

Clive Barker’s Weaveworld . I had a hard time staying interested.

11.       Favorite book you've read this year?

S.R. Howen’s Medicine Man I: Chief of All Time. I love how she takes the reader into the world of the Indians.

12.       When do you do most of your reading?

I find it’s best for me to read two hours before bedtime. Dinner is over, house is quiet, I had my bath, and I’m winding down. Sometimes, I’ll read on the weekend during the day but only if the teenage boys are out of the house. Then it’s just me, my wife, the dogs, and a good read.

13.       Favorite place to read?

If the weather is nice and dry, I like to be sitting under a shade tree in the backyard. There’s nothing like sitting in the shade with book or E-Reader in hand and the wind blowing over you, sipping on ice tea.

14.       Favorite genre?

Of course, it’s horror; anything from King, Lovecraft, or Barker.

15.       Do you loan your books?

I will but rather not. I’m very particular about keeping my books in pristine shape. Don’t bend or wrinkle the cover. Don’t creases or fold back the binder and pages. Always use a book marker. Never write in it; only words belong are the ones it was published with.

16.       Favorite book to recommend?

Besides mine, I guess it would have to be Needful Things. It was a fun and suspenseful. Another book of very colorful characters.

17.       How do you keep your books organized?

The ones in the bookshelf I organize them by grouping each author by itself, keeping each on their own shelf. I take that group and place the tallest book in back of the shorter ones. I don’t worry about numbers or alphabetical.
