READ THE INTERVIEW

What is your favorite book today?

I have several books I love and narrowing it down to one is difficult. That said, if I had to, I would probably pick The Stand by Stephen King. It’s an epic novel, has all the elements of science fiction/fantasy/Noir fiction that I love, a huge, amazingly fleshed out cast of characters, the classic conflict of good vs. evil, and crossed over to graphic novels. I love everything about it.

Tell us about your current book in 10 words.

Bad girl turned badass saves the day with kickass powers.

Do you have any bad book habits?

Hmm… I guess I have a tendency to download books on my Nook or Kindle and never actually read them. I always mean to, but there are so many they end up getting lost in the queue.

E-Reader or print? and why?

E-Reader all the way. When I initially got my Nook (I have a Kindle now as well), I imagined that I’d still read print books, but the truth is, I rarely pick one up anymore. The technology is reminiscent of my favorite television show, Star Trek: TNG, plus you can take an entire library with you anywhere you go. I’ve heard people talk about how important it is to them to feel the book in their hands, to turn the pages, but for me, what has always been truly important is what is INSIDE the book. The words, the ideas, the stories. I don’t care how I get them, as long as I get them.

One book at a time or multiples?

I often read multiple books at a time. I usually have at least two going, one that is informative in some way, and one that is purely for entertainment purposes. When do you do most of your reading?

During lunch and at night, before bed. It’s such a lifelong habit that I have difficulty sleeping unless I read first, although I always stick to light reading at night. Fluffy fiction, as I call it. The kind that you can pick right up even if you fall asleep reading it.

Favorite genre?

Paranormal/fantasy/science fiction. I also really dig comic books and graphic novels, although I read them less because it’s an expensive habit.

Do you loan your books?

Only to people I think will return them. And only once if you don’t return!

Favorite book to recommend?

I’d come back to The Stand by Stephen King.

How do you keep your books organized?

Mostly be genre, then author, however I do have a section that’s just a hodgepodge of books.

Re-reader or not?

Definitely. A good book always has little nuances you miss the first time you read.

What would make you not finish a book?

If I fall asleep too many times without being able to finish a chapter.

Keep books or give them away?

I like to reread books once in a while so keep most of them, although every few years I’ll clean house a bit and get rid of a few.

READ AN EXCERPT

He held out his free hand and I reached for it without thinking. Taking the hand of this stranger seemed like the most natural thing in the world.

Our fingers touched and my skin came alive. I felt a surge of electricity as some sort of energy shot from his hand into mine, running through my whole body and back to his like an endless circuit. I couldn’t stifle the gasp that broke through my lips. I stared at him, my vision narrowing until his face and eyes and smile were the only things I could see.

The energy between us exploded outward like a wave into the crowd, through the people and everything around me stopped. The music ended like a switch had been flipped, the people froze mid-step and even the air around me seemed to stop moving.

MEET THE AUTHOR
Rose Shababy and her family reside in eastern Washington State. Rose grew up in the Northwest but swears she’s going to move to warmer climates someday. She’s claimed this for over 20 years, however, and has yet to move more than 75 miles away from her mother.
Rose has a deep love of all things Star Trek and yearns to travel the heavens, as well as an intense desire to be bitten by a radioactive spider. Unfortunately she sucks at science and math so she hasn’t been able bring her dreams to life, instead living vicariously through books, comics, television and film. She hopes to someday make a million dollars so she can afford to buy her way to the international space station, but she’d settle for being able to fly around the world and leap tall buildings in a single bound.

Rose also loves to cook and worked for years in a gourmet Italian grocery and deli where she learned to hone her skills. She prepares culinary masterpieces for her family, but fervently wishes the dishes would wash themselves. Especially now that her dishwashers/children are nearly grown and only one still lives at home.

Rose likes to use her free time wisely. For instance, she likes to daydream, will often read for hours until she falls asleep on the couch with an electric blanket and a warm tabby cat curled up on her hip, as well as spending cozy weekend days watching sci-fi movies like Sharknado and Mega Piranha with her husband.

If Rose were a cartoon animal, she’d prefer to be a wise old owl or a sleek and sexy jaguar, but in reality she’d probably be a myopic mole with coke-bottle glasses.

    1. Btw, I'm totally with you on the loaning! Books are precious, and I've loaned them to some people...and learned my lesson to be more strict. I love sharing books because then you have something to talk about. I don't like my books being lost or ruined. :(
