READ THE INTERVIEW

What is your favorite book today?

My all time favorite book—and has been for a really long time—is Catch 22 by Joseph Heller. I first read the novel in a high school advanced English class. The story has enough colorful characters to stack up against any Russian novel. The perspective of war is darkly existential. It’s full of airplanes. (I’m a pilot). And the darn thing just makes me laugh every damn time I read it. What more could you want?

Tell us about your current book in 10 words.

Murder by Munchausen Trilogy: “Serial killers digitally resurrected to live & hunt in hacked replicants.” (I cheated with the ‘&’.)

What are you reading right now?

This Kind of War: The Classic Military History of the Korean War by T.H. Fehrenbach and In the Distance by Hernan Diaz.

Except for The Bridges at Tokyo-Ri, M*A*S*H, and F-86 Fighter Ace Joseph McConnell, I really don’t know much about the Korean War, so I thought I’d find out about it.

I got sucked into In the Distance with the following quote on Book Gorilla:

“Something like Huckleberry Finn written by Cormac McCarthy: an adventure story as well as a meditation on the meaning of home.”—The Times

Twain and Cormec? Sounds too good to be true.

E-Reader or print? and why?

To be honest, I’m kind of a paper pulp snob…but the reality is that I do all my reading on my iPad. It’s just too damn easy—first of all, losing all the weight and space. And I have my whole library with me all the time.

One book at a time or multiples?

This answer goes with the previous question, because with eBooks, I am back to plowing through two or three books at a time, just like in college. So, my reading has really increased, again—which is great.

Dog-ear or bookmark? (don't worry—Librarian Judith won't hold it against you—much)

I bookmark in Kindle and dog-ear in Scribd. Back in the olden days of Gutenberg, I traveled extensively and used my airline boarding pass stubs for bookmarks. When I went back to a favorite book, it also reminded me of where I had been at the time.

When do you do most of your reading? Favorite place to read?

Any time. Any place I can. Another great benefit of eBooks.

Favorite book to recommend?

Besides all the usual classics (Catch 22, Huckleberry Finn, Slaughterhouse Five, Little Big Man, or To Kill a Mockingbird), I recommend anything by Christopher Moore (Noir), Caimh McDonnell (A Man with One of Those Faces), or Jay Spencer Green (Breakfast at Cannibal Joe’s). There’s an awful lot of great writing going on out there today.

READ AN EXCERPT

The Darknet Chapter 18 – A Hillside Dump

The ride to the crime scene was deathly silent. Nothing personal. That was just Jake’s usual way, an angry meditation to prep for facing down the grim reaper’s handy work. I could have let the Crown Vic chauffeur us but driving gave me something to do. It was a short trip down the Shoreway towards Battery Park. We got off at West 49th Street, near the Parkview Nite Club, a blues club Jake used to haunt in his youth until it went too upscale for his taste. The collection of official vehicles with flashing lights on Herman Avenue made GPS unnecessary.

As usual, Jake jumped out and went right for the body before the engine was even off. I tracked down the patrol unit that was first on the scene to get briefed. The guys were responding to a call from Animal Control which got a call from an elderly dog walker who noticed a growing circle of buzzards overhead and called to get a presumed carcass removed from the neighborhood before it drew coyotes which surely, she feared, would have eventually turned their hunger towards her beloved Bichon. I spotted her easily, cradling her pet in her arms among the gaggle of gawkers pooling outside the crime scene tape. Even though patrol had taken her statement, I went to speak with her. I didn’t expect to get much more from her—and I didn’t—but sometimes it’s more about “customer relations” than police work, and witnesses feel slighted if they don’t get to speak with a detective. Something Jake had no patience for…

    1. Hi Bernie --

Besides the main characters—Jake, Maddie & the Baron—I really liked Q best of all. Mainly because he was a really different kind of character from me personally.

      Thanks.

  3. Hi Librarian Judith --

Thanks for hosting my blog tour this week. Those were great interview questions about my reading habits.

  4. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block and, if so, how do you overcome it?

    1. Hi Peggy --

Not really. You have to have something to write about to write. So, most times, I'm working through the character and plot issues to decide what's going to happen. It comes mainly because I don't use an outline.

      Thanks.

    1. Hi Bernie --

Really, anywhere that I can—which is the beauty of laptops and tablets. I mostly write on my iPad with a bluetooth keyboard, sometimes at my desk, sometimes in bed, sometimes out back on the patio. It's great.

      Thanks.
