READ THE INTERVIEW WITH FATEMAH MIRZA

Tell us about your current book in 10 words.
Set yourself up for long-term success as a marketing professional. (Exactly 10!)

What are you reading right now?
I’m currently reading an “Introduction to C++.” It might sound dull but I enjoy reading a lot of different books to build my knowledge. I’m always on the look out for different ways through which I can help my business, CareerTuners, grow and expand. And I’m trying to learn some programming so that I can understand how to better link our services to different language models using programming.

Do you have any bad book habits?
Hmm. I’m not sure how much this counts but I like to highlight sentences and phrases and take notes. I do that a lot with I’m reading business or leadership books. In my mind, I see them as learning books so I treat them pretty close to textbooks!

E-Reader or print? and why?
That is a hard question. But I’m going to have to say physical print books. There’s just no beating the feeling of holding a book in your hand as you read it. There’s something about that experience that’s just so fulfilling!

One book at a time or multiples?
I’m part of the multiple group. I like having at least one other option available to me to give my brain a “break” from what I’m reading it. That way I don’t feel like I’m stuck in a monotonous rut.

Favorite place to read?
I’ve never thought about this before but I like to move around as I read. My usual reading spots are in my office, the living room couch, and my bed. More than the spot, it’s more important to me that I settle into a peaceful area before I start to read. If that makes sense!

Favorite genre?
I love a good romance novel. I think they’re incredibly fun to read and engage with. You can give me a fun romance novel any day of the week and I’ll be keen to try it out!

Re-reader or not?
Not a re-reader. I like to thoroughly dive into a book and that’s it. I think the only books I’ll reference again are self-help or leadership type books but in those cases, I’m looking for a specific piece of advice more than a complete re-read.

READ AN EXCERPT

Every person applying for a marketing director position has the same hard skills. This makes soft skills the differentiating factor. As one marketing director shared, “Everyone wants the title and the responsibility, but are you good at growing people? At managing a team? At strategically getting things done?”

And the best way to develop such skills is by practical application and/or getting the advice of an experienced person. Good mentors will help you polish your soft skills in particular. They help identify gaps in your leadership skills and overcome them. That way, you do not become a “manager” or a “boss,” rather, you become a transformational leader.

Transformational leaders define a big vision and activate the people around them toward vision achievement. They serve as a facilitator, solving problems that the team cannot. They empower the team to do a lot of the front-line tasks while they stay at the helm and make sure that the boat is headed in the right direction. They connect big company goals to individual goals and ease the team’s path forward. They keep information flowing because that is the key to their, the teams’, and the organizations' success.

Teams with such leaders are eager to evolve and grow because they are united under a single banner and are willing to put in the time, effort, and energy to help the organization succeed. These leaders become excellent directors who lead the company to great success.
