What I Would Tell a New Author

I would tell a new author to simply write as per what your heart tells you. Think about it this way – start writing whatever comes to your mind. Don’t worry about anything else. Don’t worry about the spelling or grammar – there are tools to take care of that. Don’t worry about what the reader will think. That is not in your hands. Focus on, “what is the message or concept or idea that I want to convey?”. Think about, “what is the emotion or expression that I want to convey?”

The first step is to start writing. Put your thoughts down using pen and paper. Let the words start flowing. Initially it will be a trickle, which will slowly turn into a steady stream with time, patience, and practice. Don’t worry about sentence structure and flow initially. The first step is always to concentrate on moving forward by penning down your thoughts.

The second step is to read your own work – first read in your mind, followed by reading it aloud. Take the assistance of a mirror if you must. Express your feelings freely. Express your emotions freely. Express your thoughts freely. Once you start reading your own writing aloud, you will realize that there are some things that need to change. Then, by the time you realize, you will have edited, corrected, and improvised your own work.

You will be surprised to see yourself spending more time on correcting and restructuring what you had originally written. Once you have done the editing process also, look back and you will see your book come alive! I went through this journey of corrections for my book, “I Survived” at least 20 times. Today, I am happy that it has come out the way I had wanted it to. Read it on Kindle or order your copy on Amazon.

READ AN EXCERPT

I remember the last time I saw her alive. She had just given birth to my baby brother on February 24, 1982. My mom had made it through the delivery but came home with a bad headache that she had been complaining about for a few days. My mother went into the bathroom and was in there too long. My oldest sister knocked at the door, but she didn’t come out. My baby brother's dad came over and knocked at the door. Shortly after, she stumbled out of the bathroom to a nearby seat and just about fell out of the chair. The ambulance was called, and they rushed my mom to the hospital. I remember being at the hospital with my family and the doctor telling my grandmother that my mom had a brain aneurysm and her brain was dying. He said they would have to pull the plug once the brain was dead. It doesn’t seem like a conversation that you should be having in front of a child, but it happened, and a few weeks later, she was gone. An intern at the hospital pulled the plug on my mom before it was time.
