Flowers in the Attic meets The Family that Preys

Madison

When the rising tides of my life peak, I’m left struggling with the currents of the storm. My dad is a gambling addict, and it costs him everything. Mama bounces back quickly from the havoc Dad’s addiction causes. She proves this by getting a new man. Her Rico Suave is just the tip of the iceberg—she moves us across state to live with him and his two sons.My older sister has no problem fitting in. Although I'm the total opposite—I am not a social butterfly. Taught to make the best of even the worst situations, maybe I should give my new family a chance.

My life finally seems to be back on track until a dreadful night, shatters my dreams. My world is flipped upside down because of the consequences I must now bear. Thinking about that night torments me. For my sanity, I must keep the door to my darkest memory locked. No one will believe me if I set the truth free—not even my own sister.

Justin

After the heartbreak my future stepsister has suffered, I understand Madison being skeptical of her ready-made family. As we get to know each other better, we learn were two birds of the same feather. Our chemistry is undeniable, but if we tempt fate, will our relationship oscillate in the balance?

Life seems to be falling into place until one night changes everything. What happens to her that she can’t even look me in the eyes. It’s like somehow, my face has scorned her. I want to be the key to her secret. But Madison won't confess—desperate to keep her darkest secret locked away.

Recommended for 16+ due to sexual content and language. Some content dealing with sexual assault may be disturbing.

The power of the wind beating against the windows becomes too much—two of them shatter. Glass explodes everywhere. Justin uses his body as a shield, keeping the invading glass from hitting me. Tanya screams bloody murder.

Jackson shouts from down the hall. “Move your asses, people!”

Justin ushers me in that direction quickly. As I move, I notice putting weight on my right foot is painful. It gives out against my will, then I’m hobbling.

Tanya rushes into the half-bath. Justin stops and scoops me up, carrying me the rest of the way, making me feel like a helpless child. It’s more than humiliating. We huddle in the half-bath. The room doesn’t have windows, thank goodness. Since the house doesn’t have a basement, this makes the half-bath the safest spot.

A flashlight propped up on the counter is our only source of light. Jackson’s forehead is wrinkled. Tanya is sitting on the toilet with the lid closed with her arms wrapped around herself. Justin is near me as I crouch in the corner, shivering uncontrollably. The house feels like an earthquake has gotten a hold of it—shaking under the wrath of the cyclone.

My heart is slamming against my ribcage. The sound blends in with the rumbling of the foundation. With the expressions on the others’ faces, I’m not imagining it. The tornado is right on top of us, and I’m certain the house is inside of it. For a couple of seconds, all sound seems to cease. The vroom of the monster is muted.

“Is it gone?” Tanya wonders.

My senses are waving red flags. The cyclone is nowhere near done. It’s only getting started. My intuition is confirmed when the roaring picks up again and, to my disbelief, is even louder. The theory about the eye is wrong. The center of the storm is not peaceful, only a momentary calm before the beast unleashes its full wrath. The wind is so ferocious, it takes everything in me not to cry.

Tanya lets out her fear. “Why is the house shaking? Why is it so loud?”

A moment later, it becomes clear why the house is trembling. It has been defeated and can no longer stay rooted. The roof cracks open. The cracks spread quickly, like worker ants determined to snag a meal, and then the roof rips off completely.

“Ah, hell!” Jackson yells.

Will You Be Tempted? Will Love Save Your Soul?

One nation under his reign.

Cardinal sins of man caused humanity to pay the price. Cali Nasser grew up in a world succeeding World War III. The aftermath forced the world dictatorship that she must now live in. A new Regime arose from the ashes. They demanded obedience and cooperation from every citizen, even in matters of the heart.

One domain ... One accord … One nation. That is the moral code. In Cali’s eyes, it all revolves around a twisted plot for control.

It used to sicken Cali how people would allow the Regime to test their love through the Temptation Trials. That is, until she met Kincade. Cali’s entire point of view changes when she falls for him. She struggles with herself, debating if she should challenge the government’s law of arranged marriage.

Cali’s childhood friend, Stefani, always kept a positive perspective about their lives until she was threatened with the same dilemma, at odds over the man she loves.

Now Cali and Stefani face a desperate choice—submit to the Regime’s will, or fight for what they value most—love. Although lust, mistaken for love, could lead to damnation. Do they give up on love or sign up for the Temptation Trials, a reality TV show where every temptation is laid before them?

The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Can love save their souls?

READ THE REVIEW

Two islands full of hot bodies just begging you to touch …

Welcome to the Temptation Trials, where you can marry your soul mate if you can make it through weeks of constant temptations (and separation from your love). After World War III, it was decided that no one married for love and that the government would assign you your spouse. If you wanted to buck the law, and marry the person you loved, then it was off to the reality show, Temptation Trials, where you had to prove your love by staving off temptation. So far, no one has ever passed the test.

Cali and Stefani think they’ll be the ones who succeed because they truly love their men. But they didn’t count on meeting other hot, fun, nice, interesting men on their island.

I have to be honest, I kind of fell for the new guys, too. This is partly due to the fact we don’t see much of their original lovers in the book (they’re on a separate island being tempted themselves), so I got to know the newbies better. And they’re super nice (and smart and thoughtful). No wonder Cali and Stefani find themselves getting confused. Plus, what’s up with that blue mist?

Sometimes I felt as if the author created the set up just to write a book with lots of sexual overtones, but even so, I was interested in the idea and the characters. I was frustrated with the cliffhanger ending (who do they choose, dang it!!) but I guess the title with “part one” should have been a clue.

Ms. Truly does a good job with her world-building, though I was a little lost at the start and wish she’d helped me along with a tad more description there. At first, I felt like I was in a club in anywhere American and then all of a sudden it was sci-fi. Still, once things got rolling, it was easier to follow.

All in all a decent, definitely adults only, dystopian novel. 4 stars.

The only crime that we’d supposedly committed was having fun at a party. This rebellion was totally against my upbringing. I’d hardly ever broken a rule, for terror of the consequences. I guess you never knew what you would do, unless you were in a situation. Regardless of this being another crime, I wanted to escape this dire situation. Freedom dwelled around the corner. I would take my chances with Cade. Strangely enough, I felt safe with him.

Darkness loomed over the area, and clouds obscured the moon. The towered pole lighting didn’t provide much light. I squinted. Rafael, still running in front us, yelled back. “They’re going to rendezvous with us three miles due west.”

“There’re escape vehicles waiting, but we have to make it through this valley first,” Cade said.

“Okay,” I replied, my voice shaking.

“You trust me?”

“Yes.” I didn’t hesitate. I somehow knew this man would protect me. Cade ended up in jail because he came back for me when I’d fallen. That was all the proof I needed to trust him. He clutched my palm tighter, then we sprinted toward the valley ahead. As we started through, I realized it wasn’t an actual valley. Uneven, knee-high grass layered the terrain. In the opaque light, I could make out broken trees, also a vast number of destroyed buildings. This was probably a former small town in between the precinct and where we’d had the party. The major cities had been restored after the war, but most of the minor towns had not. This town had been obliviated.

My adrenaline must’ve been in overdrive, I didn’t stumble. Luckily, I’d always been a fast runner. Cade was swift, but I kept up with him. We caught up to Rafael. Three other men in black gear and several inmates were on our tail. They’d decided to take the risk.

“We’re almost there,” Cade relayed.

Gunfire sounded to the rear. A dude to my side screamed. He tumbled over, getting shot in his back. More blasts ignited from our pursuers. Cade yanked us behind a large tree—we crouched low. My eyes scanned the perimeter. Friction bloomed in the atmosphere—the darkness made it hard to tell what was occurring. Firing came from every direction. Cade’s men must be retaliating. Inmates scrambled in an attempt to flee from bullets. I didn’t think my heart could beat any faster. Cade faced me, pointing to the tall weeds over in the distance. An enforcer lurked within the grass. He blasted his weapon, hitting someone. They yelped.

“Stay here,” Cade whispered. “I’m gonna take him out.”

I grabbed his arm. I didn’t want him to fight an armed officer. “Let’s just make a run for it,” I advised.

“No. This area is open. There’s too much of a risk of him shooting one of us.” Cade scoped out the scene. “If this doesn’t go as planned, I want you to run to the pickup point. We’re only about a mile out from the rescue vehicles.”

“But….”

“No buts. Just keep straight and stay low.”

“Be careful.”

This book concludes the trilogy that was begun in Sonar the Crashing and continued in Sonar the Cyclone. Click on the titles to read our reviews of those two books.

It was good to see the people we've come to like in the other stories and see how things have resolved themselves in their personal lives. Although there were some elements I didn't quite believe (for instance, Bryan and Shiray's kiss in the middle of a battle didn't ring true to me. That's a personal pet peeve of mine in SciFi romances as well as romantic suspense), but for the most part everything fit together.

Reading this reminded me again of watching a show on television or reading a graphic novel. The series as a whole didn't draw me in as much as I would have liked-- I felt like I was on the outside looking in at the story. But, the story was interesting enough to hold my attention and made me want to read the entire trilogy. 3.5 stars.

Several days passed since I had told Nile about Amere. I’d been majorly pouting with Nile’s no touching rules. I wanted to just say screw it and throw him against the wall. But when I contemplated us being together, it made my heart ache. I don’t know why I thought if I kept him at a distance, it would keep him safe.

Cessar yanked me from my reverie. I jumped. I was in the casual dining area after dinner. He leaned against the bar table I was sitting at.

“Cessar, you scared me.”

“Sorry.” His chocolate eyes beamed. “I didn’t mean to startle you. I’ve been wanting to talk to you.”

“Okay, go on.”

He scanned the room. A few other Kadanans were eating and making idle chit-chat. “Can we go somewhere more private? What I want to discuss is personal.”

“Sure.” My heart pounded as I followed him into one of the living rooms. He closed the door, then came over to where I was standing.”

“What’s going on, Cessar?”

“Symone, I thought we had a connection. We get along great.”

“We do have a connection. I enjoy your friendship.”

“I want us to be more. I know you have been hanging with Nile. I needed you to know how I felt before it was too late. Are you and he already courting?”

“No, we’re not together officially. But I’m not going to lie. We have been spending a lot of time with each other.”

“I’ve known Nile for a while. He’s a womanizer.”

“I know Nile also, and there’s another side to him.”

“I would like for you to consider us getting together. I really care about you.”

He grabbed my hand and leaned in closer. I backed up slightly, but I couldn’t go any farther because I was against the fireplace. My stomach tightened. I couldn’t pretend anymore. I had strong feelings for Nile.

“Cessar, you’re a really great guy … I just don’t think we can be anything more than friends.”

The door whirled open. Nile walked in, took one look at us, and lost it. I quickly pulled my hand from Cessar but could only imagine what we looked like backed into a corner.

“What the hell is going on!”

READ THE REVIEW

Sonar the Cyclone follows the events in Sonar the Crashing and parallels some of the events in Melanie's Evanescent Journey (links are to our reviews of those titles). I experienced a sense of deja vu when I got to the parallel action (in fact, I had to go back to my copies of the other books to check it out)-- this time, however, we get Melanie's rescue told in more detail from Kadanan's point of view.

Unfortunately, the same issues are in this book as in the other two--but there is still a good story under those issues and a lot more action in this book than in Sonar the Crashing.

The action picks up from the end of Sonar the Crashing and I think it would be good for people to read the two Sonar books before reading Melanie's Evanescent Journey -- it's not really part of the trilogy, but more of a companion book. The conflict between the Kadanans and the Polars is really heating up and there's actually been a vision that there could be a lot of deaths. We have here the preparations for the war that is to come in the third book of the trilogy, coming this summer. And, I'll need to find out what happens to the characters in these books.

I hope the author fixes some of the issues in the books as she prepares for the release of Sonar The Surge. 3 stars.

My stomach roiled. I hadn’t been able to sleep well for weeks since I’d seen that glimpse of the future. But Tara told me she hadn’t gotten any more from it. She said that meant we had time. It didn’t provide much comfort. I needed to put that away for later; today I had an important meeting. Kadeem had been locked up for five months, and I finally convinced my father to speak with him. We were going to meet with him in his study. Being honest about Kadeem would be the only way to earn his trust. I knocked on the door to my father’s study.

“Come in,” he bellowed.

I opened the door and strolled inside. “They should be bringing him in shortly,” my father said.

I took a seat in one of the chairs in front of his desk. John, my father’s second in command, was standing to the side of his desk. He was so still you could mistake him for a statue. My mouth was very dry as I tried to swallow. I just wanted to get this meeting over with. A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door.

“Yes,” my father said.

Sharaf and Tazman came through the door, each holding Kadeem by his arm, each arm in handcuffs.

“Sit him in the chair,” my father commanded.

I gave Kadeem a smile, which he returned. Sonar, how I missed him! Then he fidgeted in the chair. Kadeem was nervous too—it surprised me. He rarely was.

“So what is it you wanted to discuss with me, Syira?” my father asked.

I cleared my throat. “Kadeem has been very cooperative for the last several months. I wanted to discuss giving him some form of freedom.”

My father stared at me impassively, but I continued, “Kadeem and I wanted to discuss a secret.”

“And what secret might that be?”

“Kadeem could have escaped at any time. He has not, because he wanted to prove his loyalty to you. He has a great power.” John, Sharaf, and Tazman seemed intrigued now by what I was saying. “He can teleport whenever he pleases.”

“Teleport?” my father asked, raising his brow.

“Kadeem,” I said, glancing over at him.

Kadeem inclined his head to me and vanished.

READ THE REVIEW

This book as an interesting premise:  four teens from another planet crash lands on our planet and have no idea who they are.-- until they start having strange, shared dreams.

The characters were interesting.  The story is told in first person from the point of view of both Shiray/Paige and Syira/Harmony, which at times can get confusing until you realize which is talking. And, they all have a desire to learn who they are.  Syira and her brothers, though, have settled into their new environment well--even to the point of developing friendships and love interests, which leads to some of the conflicts in the story.

There were some editing issues that I had trouble getting past--misspelled words, awkward phrasing, etc. The prologue, while it told about the crash and the planet these four are from, detracted from the story, in my opinion. As a reader, I would have preferred to jump right into the action and find out along with the characters what was going on.  And, as I have said, the first person POV with more than one character didn't quite work for me.

However, the author does present a well-thought out world to start this new series.  There was a lot of action, especially in the second half of the book  I was invested enough in the characters to want to find out what happened to them. Actually, this book would have made an interesting graphic novel, and I could see it as the premise for a SyFy series.  3 stars.

Title: Waking Dream

That night I had the scariest dream of them all. I opened my eyes, and I was in a spacecraft going through the atmosphere of a dark planet. I walked into the cock pit and there was my guy. I could feel my cheeks flush. There were also four other women and six other men, all around my age. My guy smiled at me.

“Are you ready? We have to hurry. A storm is on the way,” he said. The huge door to the ship opened. It looked like the opening to the back of a cargo ship. I gasped in disbelief. The sky outside the ship was black, and all we could see was water. The men shined the light in the water and threw down a net.

“Don’t be scared, Sweetheart,” my guy said. “We’re very low on food, and there is no telling how long this storm will last.” I smiled at him. Suddenly the wind started howling, like a wind I had never heard before. It sounded like a freight train. The water started forming huge waves and the ship started rocking.

“We have to hurry! The storm is coming in fast, and it will take us down if we don’t get out of here!” one of the men yelled. A huge wave rose up and washed over the ship. “Everyone grab a hold whole of something!” somebody screamed. “I’m taking off!”

Then another huge wave washed over the ship. I tried to grab a hold of something, but the pressure was too strong. I was too close to the door, and fell out. We were high up, and it took me a while before I hit the water. I went deep under. The water was so cold; it felt like knives were stabbing me all over my body. I tried to swim to the surface, remembering I knew how, but it was like the pressure was keeping me down. I had never felt so scared before. Then I saw him and he grabbed me. He had a rope around his waist. He tugged on it, and it started pulling us up. Before we reached the surface I could no longer hold my breath. Water came gushing into my mouth, and I couldn’t breathe. Oh my God, I can’t breathe! My mind screamed. My body started jerking. I was frantic, and we still had not reached the surface. The next thing I saw was darkness.

I heard voices. “She’s coming to! She’s coming to!” I opened my eyes slowly. I felt pressure on my chest; I turned quickly on my side and started coughing up water and gasping for air. Everyone started laughing and sighing in relief. I looked up, and my guy was leaning over me. He must have revived me. He was crying and laughing. He grabbed me into his arms. “You scared me. I thought I’d lost you,” he said.

“Thank you,” I said, hugging him. I felt relieved to be in his arms.

“We’ve made it out of Hydrocesis atmosphere safely. Let’s head home.” I heard a man say.

Then I jolted awake, and quickly sat up in my bed. I was sweating profusely. This was no regular dream; this was a waking dream. I could still feel the pressure in my lungs and the taste of salt water in my mouth. My skin felt wet, and I was cold. I started sobbing. Who was I? Where did I come from? I needed answers and stayed awake for the rest of the night, my mind astir. Everything was a blur.

MEET THE AUTHOR

I have wanted to be an author since I was fifteen years old and I'm grateful to have accomplished this dream. I have three wonderful children and a husband who defines the person I am today.

I have very vivid dreams and a wild imagination. I like to read and watch tons of TV shows and movies. I’m addicted to romance and get a thrill out of action and suspense. I write New Adult, Fantasy, Sci-fi, and Paranormal-Romance.

In the Sonar series it was fun to explore different elements of Sci-fi romance and create various realms of powers for my characters. I want to show my readers that Sci-fi can be fun, but also traumatic. I hope you guys enjoy the Sonar Series.
