Legendary actor Finn Forrester and his wife philosopher Ella Sinclair Forrester met on the location shoot for Jean Mercier’s film Celebration. The world has been captivated by their fairy-tale romance since Finn famously proposed on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival. As the couple now prepares to celebrate their thirtieth wedding anniversary, they wonder if their children will ever find love.

Eldest daughter Betty is excelling in a medical residency program in New York City—and has convinced herself that distancing herself from emotions is the path to success. Youngest son Albert, a recent college graduate, is trying to find his footing in Boston as he struggles with his identity. Free-spirited Georgia, her mother’s spitting image and an actress following in her father’s footsteps, has been cast in Jean Mercier’s final film, mysteriously titled Beauty. When she arrives on set in Iceland and meets her costar, sparks fly. Is history repeating itself? How has growing up in the shadow of the world’s most iconic love story affected each of the Forrester children?

“Hello, Butterfly,” Omar said, kissing the top of her head.

“These are for you,” Clay added, handing her a large bouquet of pink flowers.

“They’re beautiful, thank you. This is Jack,” she said, touching his chest. “And this is Omar and his better half, Clay.”

Omar shot her the side-eye.

“Nice to meet you,” they all said, shaking hands.

“Let me take your jackets. Brunch is in the living room, please go sit,” Tess said.

Jack sat on the couch, and Omar and Clay took the chairs. “What can I get everyone to drink?” Tess asked.

“Well, it’s brunch, Butterfly. There bloody well had better be cocktails,” Omar joked.

“Of course. What would you like? A mimosa?”

Omar nodded.

“Make it two, please,” Clay said.

“When in Rome,” Jack added.

Tess went to retrieve the drinks while the men chatted.

“Tess has told me a lot about you guys,” Jack said.

“Likewise,” Omar replied. “In the twenty years I’ve known her, she’s hardly shown any interest in the many would-be suitors who have tried to catch her eye. Now I’m getting a dozen texts a day about you. I must say, I was dying to meet you.”

Jack blushed. “Tess is quite a woman.” He glanced over to the kitchen. “I’m still waiting to wake up from this dream, because she’s perfect.”

“Oh, well I’d be happy to tell you about her many flaws. Let the nightmare begin,” Omar jested.

“I heard that,” Tess called, carrying four champagne flutes on a tray, three with mimosas and one sparkling water, which she placed on the coffee table.

“I’m impressed, Butterfly. If this writing thing doesn’t work out, maybe we can get you a job at a saloon.”

“I do love a good peasant skirt,” she said, knuckling the top of his head and tussling his hair.

“Now I’m going to have bad hair all day,” he complained.

“Serves you right,” she said, plopping down beside Jack.

“We were just getting ready to tell Jack about your flaws,” Omar said. “Where shall we begin?”

“Clay, was I this terrible when I first met you?” Tess asked.

“No, you weren’t. You were the epitome of grace and kindness,” Clay replied.

“I’m just teasing,” Omar said, smiling at Tess. He turned his attention to Jack. “Truly, we’re so happy to meet you.”

“Tess said that you two have been friends since college, but she didn’t mention how you met,” Jack replied.

“Everyone, please take some food,” Tess interjected.

They all helped themselves to the artichoke and tomato frittata and green bean salad.

“Tess and I met on our first day of college. It was orientation day, where they put you in groups and try to force you to bond. Then there was a cookout. At the end of the compulsory festivities, a bunch of kids decided to go hang out on the football field. Tess and I both ended up there. Someone was blasting music and most of the kids were smoking pot, but since that wasn’t our scene, Tess and I wandered off together and lay down at the other end of the field, looking at the stars. We didn’t even know each other, but we just started talking and something clicked. She told me that she was writing a novel and that I was the only person she had told. And I swear to you, she was barely eighteen years old, but I knew she was serious, that she was the real deal. I remember telling her the novel was going to be extraordinary.”

Tess leaned against Jack and he rubbed her arm.

Omar continued, “And then I revealed that I was gay and that she was the only person I had ever told. In my family and culture, it’s a crime. She said that life is so unfair and it’s especially hard with family because even when they disappoint us to the core, we still long for their love and approval. Then she said I was a beautiful person and deserved to live my life fully and authentically. So strange to think about it now, how much trust we had for each other in a matter of moments.” Omar watched Tess and Jack with a soft smile on his face. “Sometimes it happens quickly, I suppose. We just know who the good souls are.”

READ THE BLURB

Controversial filmmaker Jean Mercier is shooting a film on location in Sweden. While spending the summer creating his latest work of cinematic art, he lives in a nearby inn with his lead actors: Albie Hughes, British veteran of stage and screen; Charlotte Reed, British indie film queen; Michael Hennesey, American TV heartthrob; Willow Barnes, fallen former teen star looking to make a comeback; and Finn Forrester, legendary Hollywood movie star. Mercier invites his friend Ella Sinclair—a beautiful, bohemian-spirited American philosopher known for her provocative writing—to stay with them for the summer. When Ella arrives, Finn is instantly enchanted by her, and soon they fall madly in love. Finn wants to plan a life together, but Ella harbors fears and convinces him to wait until the film wraps to decide their future. In a case of life imitating art, the film they are creating explores “the big questions” and prompts the stars to reflect on the crossroads they face in their own lives. How will their experiences on location affect them when they return home? The answers won’t come until months later, when the cast and crew reconvene on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival—but their revelation will make for one unforgettable night.

She paused and said, “Albie, tell them about how you met Margaret. It’s such a wonderful story. I’m sure everyone would love to hear it.”

“I would,” Finn said as he and Ella exchanged a smile.

“Me too,” Charlotte added. “In the many years we’ve known each other, I don’t think I’ve ever heard this story.”

Albie smiled. “All right,” he said. The waitstaff returned and passed around plates, each with a slice of tart and generous dollop of freshly made whipped cream.

They all began eating and Albie said, “I met her at a party in London thrown by some aristocrat. Completely pretentious. I was the lead in a play on the West End, and the director invited me. You know how that blue-blooded set loves to have a celebrity in their midst, something to gab about when they’re at their holiday homes.”

Everyone laughed.

Albie took a bite of his tart and continued, “I brought a girl with me, some actress, can’t even remember her name. We were all dressed in absurdly formal attire, could hardly tell the guests from the waitstaff, eating catered, crustless watercress sandwiches or some such rubbish. All of a sudden, in walks a stunningly beautiful woman wearing a simple, sky-blue frock and holding a pie. It’s hard to overstate how extraordinarily out of place she looked. I was immediately transfixed. She had the biggest, most beautiful eyes, and her hair fell in waves.” He paused, as if reliving every detail. “Anyway, the host’s wife ran over, greeted her, and ferried the pie over to the dessert table. I couldn’t take my eyes off this woman. The way she moved, her smile, the way her eyes sparkled when she laughed. I watched her for hours. I asked someone about her, and they said she was an elementary school teacher who happened to know the sister of the host. Eventually, I saw her standing alone at the dessert table and decided to make my move. The table was covered in mile-high meringues and fancy chocolate tortes encased in sugar domes, no doubt from the finest bakery in London, and there was her humble homemade pie off to the side. I sidled up to her and said, ‘Everything looks good.’ She smiled at me and I felt like I was struck by lightning. I picked up a plate and a serving utensil and said, ‘I think I’m going to try this one,’ and I took a slice of the blueberry pie. She looked at me and said, ‘I made that. To tell you the truth, I feel like a bit of a fool. I didn’t know what kind of party it was.’ I said, ‘I’m Albie, what’s your name?’ In her angelic voice, she said, ‘Margaret.’ I’ll tell you, I fell completely in love with her then and there.”

“What about your date?” Michael asked.

“Broke up with her at the party. I called a car for her and sent her home. Felt terrible about it, but when you meet the one, you can’t let anything stand in your way. True love is the greatest gift in the world; one mustn’t squander it or be foolish enough to think it will simply wait until it obliges our schedules.”

“So, it really was love at first sight,” Charlotte said wistfully.

“Indeed. Anyone who tells you that love at first sight isn’t real, well, those unlucky bastards have just never experienced it. Take it from an old fucker like me: when you get hit by lightning, you surrender to it. All the details, the little things you don’t know about each other, you’ll learn those over time, and if you really love each other, most of it won’t matter. There’s no replacing that inexplicable, inconvenient, all-encompassing feeling of love. Standing there in that moment, holding that slice of pie, I knew I couldn’t live without her. These days, people court each other like they’re applying for a job or running through a checklist. But this is where the artists—the poets, the novelists, the filmmakers—have always known better: true love has no reason.”

What happens when a seemingly ordinary woman with a passion for the arts falls in love with a Hollywood star known for his bachelor status and quick temper with the paparazzi? Something extraordinary.

Dee Schwartz is a writer and arts researcher. Ryder Field is a famous actor descended from Hollywood royalty. On the night they meet outside a bar, their connection is palpable. Ryder’s mother—legendary actress Rebecca Field, half of Hollywood’s golden couple when she died—was kidnapped and murdered by a crazed fan in a shocking event that forever tarnished Tinseltown. Dee’s mother, too, died when she was young. Bonded by this loss, the two embark on a love story that explores their search for magic—or “gold dust”—in their lives. Everything changes, however, when Dee mysteriously disappears after an awards ceremony. Is history repeating itself? Can there truly be a happily ever after in Hollywood?

“Well, I’m impressed with how quickly you whipped up that frittata, considering that you obviously forgot we were coming,” Troy said, as they all sat down at the outdoor dining table.

Dee giggled.

“It’s so unlike you,” Sara said, as she cut her muffin into four equal pieces.

“I know. This whole thing has been unlike me. I even went skinny dipping in his pool. That was a first.”

“Long overdue if you ask me,” Troy said, raising his mimosa and winking. “Tell us everything. What’s he like in bed? He seems like a take control kind of guy. Was it dirty, in that fabulous morally ambiguous way?”

“I don’t want to hear about the sex,” Sara said.

“Then cover your ears,” Troy rebuffed.

Dee smiled, looked down, and bit her lip.

“Wow, it must have been something if you’re getting flustered even with us,” Troy said. “That’s it. Tell us everything.”

“It was magical. We have this connection that’s hard to explain. I feel so close to him.”

“Really?” Sara asked.

“Yeah. He loves art as much as I do. We watched movies, he played a bunch of music—he’s a guitarist and he writes his own songs. He has a super sexy voice. I read my poetry.” She paused for a moment and then continued, “And it’s not just common interests. We understand each other. We both lost our mothers when we were young. It’s something you can never understand unless you’ve been through it.”

“I can see how that would be bonding,” Sara said, now sounding more sympathetic.

“He’s not like what you might think. He’s sweet, gentle, confident yet vulnerable. He’s definitely outgoing and you know what I’m like, but when we were together, I felt a little bolder and I got the feeling he felt more settled or something. But it was like we were both more ourselves somehow. I don’t know how to explain it. We just fit together so naturally. When I was in his arms, there’s no other place I ever wanted to be.”

“Wow. You never talk like that. Here I thought it was just a sex romp,” Troy joked.

Dee giggled. “It’s definitely more than that.”
