Kidnapped, taken to another planet - how much worse can Riley's life get?

The kidnapper is her boyfriend Jothur and Sacral is his home planet. The castle inhabitants are psychic, mainly telepaths, and they are at odds with the Mutes in the forest. The psychics' plan is to discover how Riley blocks her thoughts. This will help them completely eradicate the Mutes who are a mixture of free telepaths and non-telepaths.

Riley seeks help from the Mutes and meets Tynan, their leader. She hopes he will help her escape the tests the telepaths want to do. Instead she discovers the magic of Sacral is dying due to an imposter being on the throne.

Riley and Tynan work together to discover the real king and place him on the throne. Part of the plan relies on Riley returning to the castle to delve for more information. Will she survive or will her mind be torn apart by the tests?

“Can you ride?” Zlora interrupted her thoughts.

“Horses? Yes, I’ve ridden before.” Riley neglected to mention she based her riding experience on a brief holiday on a dude ranch. Thank goodness I wore trousers to work today.

A vacant look appeared in Zlora’s eyes again. Riley stood quietly, not wanting to interrupt the huntress. After a few moments Zlora relaxed and looked up at the sky. Riley followed her gaze to an empty sky. What was the huntress looking for? A smudge at treetop level quickly turned into –.

Riley stared in disbelief. Two flying horses headed in their direction. She gulped nervously. Zlora had asked about riding – not flying. Her novice experience might have been able to cope on the ground, but flying through the sky with so much space below her? What about the gravity itching to drag her down to earth? A shudder of apprehension passed through her.

The flying horses landed and pawed the ground. Up close they looked completely different than the horses of Earth. They were twice the height of a normal stallion, but much finer boned. Once they had landed, the wings folded neatly along their sides. A glorious black stallion and a delicate golden-brown mare stood before her. Both sets of wings were pure white.

The black lifted his head and looked at her. Riley’s eyes opened wide as his fierce gaze fixed intently on her.

I hope he’s not my mount. He looks mean.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Sue Perkins emigrated to New Zealand in the 1980s. A few years later she took a creative writing course, then started writing novels and short stories. Despite rejections from several publishers Sue persevered and in 2006 she won the Pacific Region of the Commonwealth Broadcasting Short Story Competition. The following year her first romance novel was published.

In the intervening years Sue has had ebook and paperback novels published for middle grade, young adult and adults, mainly in the fantasy genre. Dragons and magic are her favourite subjects in fantasy, but ghosts are also making their appearance in her young adult books.

The first day of lessons strained Ash's decision. Lady Surat taught them five basic spells and then drilled them in these spells until they could use them perfectly. Ceku picked them up easily, while Ash had difficulty. The method felt wrong and it took several attempts for her to get them right. To make them work, Ash had to force herself to ignore her inner voice, which kept telling her to cast the spell a different way to the teacher's instructions.

"Ash, you seem to be having difficulty." Lady Surat had taken her to one side leaving the other three to practice. "Is there something wrong?"

"No. Not really." Ash felt embarrassed to tell the teacher her brain insisted on a better way of casting the spells.

"You must be honest with me, Ash. I can't help if you won't tell me your problem with the magic."

"I'm sorry, Lady Surat. I don't know how to tell you without appearing rude."

"Why not say it outright." The Lady smiled at her.

"My brain keeps arguing with me. It keeps telling me the spells should be done a different way, then it interferes when I try and cast them the way you instructed."

"I see." Lady Surat looked thoughtful. "When the others leave for lunch I'd like you to stay behind. In the meantime, keep trying it the Spires way.">

Lunchtime arrived and the other three were dismissed with the instruction to return in an hour. Ceku and the young man she'd sat next to looked across at Ash with a smug expression on their faces. The boy who had been sitting next to her flashed a sympathetic smile as the door closed behind them leaving Lady Surat and Ash alone in the room.

"Now then, Ash. Show me how you think the spells should be done."

"It's not me, Lady Surat, it's my brain keeps interfering. I'm quite happy to cast the spells as per your instructions."

MEET THE AUTHOR

Sue Perkins grew up in Devon, England and emigrated to New Zealand with her family. Sue and her husband now live at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. Her interests include writing, reading, genealogy and aqua jogging.

Sue’s book genres include romance, fantasy romance, young adult fantasy and middle grade fantasy. Her first romance book was released in May 2007, quickly followed by a fantasy trilogy. She now has many books published in all the genres. Her aim for the future is to write a full-length epic fantasy novel. The outline is complete, and Sue is hoping to find time to finish the first draft by the end of 2017. Meanwhile she carries on with her current fantasy series - Rak Shoma, a blend of magic and fantasy.
