READ THE BLURB

Annie O'Malley's dream of owning a secondhand bookstore in tight-knit Audubon Springs is coming true. Still reeling from her parents' sudden deaths, she believes that signs or messages can be found within the pages of books. She loves her job and has made plenty of friends but longs for the acceptance only love and a family can provide.

Tony Iuliano is there to fix the wiring in her shop. He doesn't believe in fate, magic, or the power of a good book. All this combined with his sexy-as-sin presence and all-knowing attitude infuriates Annie. The quirky bookworm intrigues him enough to accept her bet to read a book from her shop. When he discovers a stack of fifty-year-old love letters in the book, he wants to leave the past alone, but seeing it as a sign, Annie challenges him to read the letters and search for the long-lost lovers or lose the bet.

While shaking the dust off several ill-fated romances and fighting their attraction at every turn, the pair soon become the town gossip daily special. If they can stop arguing long enough, they may just discover this particular sign was meant for them all along.

“Are we going to shake on this?” He extended his hand and grinned.

Annie hesitated for a split second. Had she ever touched Tony? Shaking his hand with that sexy, superior glint in his eyes unnerved her, but she needed to seal the deal.

His warm hand engulfed hers, shooting a jolt of electricity through her veins. He had a solid, firm grip, the kind to hold a shaky person steady. Lifting her gaze to his, she smiled when his eyes widened in a flash of surprise. It had been a long time since she’d really touched another person. When the warmth from his hand made its way dangerously close to parts of her that had lain dormant for years, she abruptly let go.

“There, deal.” Flushed, she returned her focus to the book in his hand. “Open it, but first, look at how worn it is, you can tell it’s been read a few thousand times.”

Tony flipped the big, hardcover book open. Instead of the expected well-worn pages, a small stack of what looked like letters bound by a string sat nestled inside. The pages were yellowed, the string frayed. The owner cut a neat and deep square into the center of the pages, nearly removing the entire contents of the book. Tony pulled them out, squinted, and weighed them in his hand.

Equally stunned, a burst of adrenaline hit Annie. Of all the treasures she’d uncovered in the two years since dealing in secondhand books, she never came across anything quite like this. This was a sign – from her parents, or other forces at work in the universe – but this book, and all its possibilities, was important to someone, somewhere.

“Now do you believe me when I say every book has a story to tell?”

Straight Chatting from the Library: RoseAnn DeFranco

RoseAnn DeFranco has stopped by The Library today to chat about books with us today as part of her virtual book tour with Goddess Fish Promotions. RoseAnn will be awarding a $25 Amazon GC to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour, so leave a comment or ask her a question to be entered. You can see the other stops on her tour here: http://goddessfishpromotions.blogspot.com/2013/10/virtual-book-tour-return-to-audubon.html

Welcome, RoseAnn! What is the favorite book you remember as a child?

I always loved to read. I think I read Little Women about five hundred times when I was a bit older. As a VERY young child? Touch and Feel Bunny still makes me smile!

Tell us about your current book in 10 words.

Return to Audubon Springs is about childhood soul mates finding their way back to one another.

What are you reading right now?

The Perfect Match by Kristan Higgans and Compromising Willa by Diana Quincy.

What books do you have on hold at the library?

A Jill Shalvis Lucky Harbor novel.

One book at a time or multiples?

Multiples.

I have several published author friends. I’m always reading more than one book at a time as a result to keep up with their releases.

Dog-ear or bookmark? (don't worry—Librarian Judith won't hold it against you—much).

Bookmarks! I love collecting bookmarks, especially ones with inspirational quotes. Several bookmarks I own were hand crafted by my daughter. My favorite is a bookmark I had made years ago with her baby picture on it. I’ve never been a fan of the dog-ear thing. If I don’t have a bookmark handy, I prefer to take my chances and know I’ll be hunting down my last spot when I next pick up the book.

Favorite book you've read this year?

Carolina Man by Virginia Kantra. I’m a big fan of hers in general, but this book really took my breath away.

Do you loan your books?

I do loan books out but only with a pinky promise that they will be returned. I’m currently hunting down a few missing books!

Favorite book to recommend?

To a new reader to the romance genre, I usually recommend the Lakeshore Chronicles series by Susan Wiggs. I’m a huge fan of her writing.

Keep books or give them away?

Because I attend a lot of writing conferences, I tend to accumulate a lot of books in my office on a daily basis. I like donating my books once I’m finished with them to the library. Just recently I was in the romance section of my local library and saw books I know I donated on the shelves. I was so happy to think that I introduced potential readers to new authors.

Emma would have looked adorable in the simple snug tank top and Bermuda shorts if it weren’t for the look of utter horror on her face.

“Have you lost your mind?” she screamed.

“Yes!” He turned off the saw, threw it on the ground, whipped off his protective goggles and tossed them as well. “Why do you ask?”

“You cut a massive hole in the back door!”

“This here is an example of our differences. You see a hole. I see a home improvement project. This is no ordinary square hole in a door, this is a doggie door.” He pushed on the large piece of cut wood until it fell and landed on the pantry floor inside with a loud clap.

“It’s about three times the size of a doggie door,” she stated flatly.

“Yeah, but I’m the dog. So Princess, what do you think?”

“I think you are insane.”

“I AM insane! You have MADE me insane! You threw all my stuff out front. You used my underwear for rags!”

“I couldn’t find anything else.”

“There is a basket full of rags in there.”

“None of them fit the occasion,” she said with a straight face.

“I must have lost my mind because that almost makes sense.” He gestured to the door. “Ladies first.” When she stared unmoving, he climbed through the cut door and opened it. “Just for the record, a caveman would have made you climb through.”

“Just for the record, I only changed the locks on the front door.”
