What is the favorite book you remember as a child?
My favorite book as a child was The Little House on the Prairie series. I think I read that series every year until I became an adult. It was such a simple time and I loved to hear of the different things that they ate growing up. Mind you, I wouldn’t touch even half of it myself, but I loved to hear how they described it.
What is your favorite book today?
I don’t think I could pick just one. I have several series that I love to read through on a regular basis. Basically, if I can’t remember some of the characters’ names, I reread it. Of course, I’m always on the hunt for books I haven’t read before from authors I know I like, but in my mind there is nothing wrong with rereading. Some of my favorite authors, (you safely can assume I like anything they write) are Rick Riordan, J.K. Rowling , Cassandra Clare, Brandon Mull, Tamara Pierce, and Angie Sage.
Tell us about your current book in 10 words.
A fairy-tale rewrite where light find its way through darkness.
What are you reading right now?
I am actually reading three different things right now. Physik for pleasure. In the Hand of the Goddess while I’m on the treadmill. I get bored otherwise and will quit walking after five minutes. And I’m reading a new story as a beta read for the editing company I work for. Can’t give out the name for that one.
What books do you have on hold at the library?
Actually, none. I don’t think I’ve ever put a book on hold at the library. I just look for something else until the one I want comes in.
Do you have any bad book habits?
I could easily spend the whole day reading despite the many things that I actually need to get done. With a husband, five kids, and two jobs, time is something I don’t have a lot of.
E-Reader or print? and why?
I can do both, but I definitely prefer print. I just like being able to hold the book and flip the pages, plus it doesn’t seem to be as hard on my eyes. Moreover, have you ever tried to read an e-reader in sunlight when sitting outside? Not as easy to do as when flipping through a book.
One book at a time or multiples?
I usually have more than one book going at any one time. Then I may even listen to a different one in the car.
Dog-ear or bookmark? (don't worry—Librarian Judith won't hold it against you—much)
I use bookmarks. A lot of the time, I’ll even make my own with an index card that has a quote I made up or need to remind myself of often. The current one reads, “Remember, just breathe” and it has a picture of a palm tree drawn on it.
Least favorite book you've read this year?
My friend recommended The Game of Thrones to me. Now, I know this is a favorite TV series and an extremely popular book series, but I finally had to put it down. Too much killing of my favorite characters in extremely violent ways for me to read. Plus, I have trouble following all the different characters and their point of views. Maybe it’s just too grown up for me?
Favorite book you've read this year?
I can’t say that I have one. I read a new one by Cassandra Clare and Rick Riordan, but I liked both equally. All the other books I’ve read have been rereads.
When do you do most of your reading?
In the summer when school is out. I’m a teacher in the process of transitioning to a preschool supervisor, which means, I’m extremely busy. During the summer, I can take my daughter to the pool or just go outside and read because there’s not even half as much for me to do during that season.
Favorite place to read?
I love being outside, but only if it’s warm. So during the spring and summer, you can definitely find me on my porch swing or by the pool reading whatever I can. During the winter months, I’m more likely to be caught reading while I’m on the treadmill. Not my favorite place to read, but it does keep me exercising for longer.
Favorite genre?
I love to read what I write, young adult fantasy.
Do you loan your books?
Only to my kids and even then, it’s iffy. Everyone else, I’m afraid I wouldn’t get the book back and then I would have to buy it again.
Favorite book to recommend?
Any of my favorites. I just told my dad about the Fable Haven series and The Apollo series, they’re both good ones to read.
How do you keep your books organized?
By series and then by order in that series. I’m running out of bookshelf space, so I may have to acquire a new one soon, much to my husband’s displeasure.
Re-reader or not?
Definitely a re-reader. If I can’t remember some of the character names or plots, it’s time to read it again. I’ve read the Little House on the Prairie and Harry Potter series so many times that I’ve got parts of them memorized.
What would make you not finish a book?
Not caring how it ends. I put down The Game of Thrones book and haven’t been back to finish it since and I’m perfectly good with that. I also couldn’t stick it out with The Hunger Games series. Keep books or give them away?
I keep them and then hide them so people don’t ask to borrow them. What can I say, I’m not a sharer.
In a land plagued by war, King Dorvin and Queen Shiara are expecting their first child. They are excited until the good fairies tell of a prophecy; that their daughter is the key to winning the war against the Shadow tribes. To protect her, mages of the kingdom create a tower to keep her and her guardian hidden until her eighteenth birthday. When Ella turns 18 she leaves the tower, only to find that her parents are dead and the Shadow tribes now control the kingdom. Trained as a warrior, and aided by the good fairies, Ella must now bring her subjects together and prepare for the final war.
“You love her, don’t you?” Jack asked quietly, his eyes never leaving Erek’s.
“Does it matter? She and I can never be together.” The sadness of this truth rang through Erek, nearly making him fall to the floor and weep. He’d waited his whole life for her. “You love her as well.”
Jack nodded his head. “Where does that leave us? What are we going to do?”
Erek feeling more tired and older than his twenty-five years replied, “It leaves us fighting for the same thing. Once this is all over, we’ll figure out the rest. For right now, we need to be content that when one of us isn’t around watching over her, the other is.”
Jack ran a hand over his newly shaved head, his eyes turned to the floor and nodded.
Erek looked at him, seeing so much of himself in this man of light. The same eyes, the same stature, the same look. Even their movements and choice of haircuts were the same. Right down to the chin strap they both wore. Erek never thought of it before, but it were almost if they were the same man. “Do you think, if we lived in another world, that we might be the same person? Me being the darker side and you the lighter?”
Jack looked up at this, his eyes wide and his mouth set in a straight line. “I’ve thought it several times actually. There are times when I’m convinced I passed by a mirror when I see you.”
Erek nodded before turning back to look at the storm brewing. He heard Jack quietly head down the stairs, leaving him to his thoughts. Ella would be safe in Jack’s hands when Erek was no longer there to protect her. He was sure of it. If Jack felt anywhere close to the way he felt, Erek knew she would be loved the way she deserved.
I’m just a small town girl, living in Ohio and making up worlds for my characters to live in. A preschool teacher by day, I live with my amazing husband while dreaming of walking hand in hand with him on the beach just searching for seashells. Together, we have five incredible kids, who are starting to make their way in this world as they take on college, high school, and elementary school. I love Christmas, the beach, seashells, painting, reading anything fantasy related, and in my very little spare time, creating new worlds for others to enjoy.
