READ THE BLURB

When Wilhemina Turner’s younger sister runs off with a young Lothario, she has no choice but to turn to the notorious rake who broke his promise and her heart, for assistance. George Bartlett, the Marquess of Chesterton, hasn’t forgotten the woman who hurt him so many years ago, but can’t deny her request, knowing that his brother’s reputation, and fortune, is at risk. A series of misfortunes leave the straight-laced widow and committed bachelor stranded, sharing both close quarters and old secrets. But when morning comes, will this unlikely pair find a second chance at love?

“Fine.” He looked away first, turning his attention back to the items he’d collected upon his desk. “If you want to join me, then you may.”

She squared her shoulders and stood a bit straighter having won their duel of wills. “Good.”

Without another word or a single glance, Chesterton left the room.

Not one to be left behind, Wilhelmina hurried after him, through the study and up the stairs.

“Where are we going?” she asked once they’d reached the top, breathless from the burst of activity.

He strode down the corridor, seemingly unaffected by the brisk climb. “To my bedroom.”

She immediately stopped. “Your bedroom? Why ever would we go in there?”

Chesterton turned back to her, one sardonic eyebrow arched high. “To change,” he answered. “You didn’t expect me to head out in this, did you?” He turned and continued toward the room, looking back at her before entering. “Are you coming?” he asked, voice smooth as warm chocolate.

This wasn’t the first time she’d been lured into George’s bedroom. He’d been an earl, the courtesy title bestowed upon him at birth, but more than that, he’d been a gentleman. Apparently, he’d lost that when he’d inherited the Marquisate. His bedroom was no longer an inviting sanctuary, and this invitation was not one of love as it had once been, but a lewd proposition, tenderness replaced by cruelty, as he watched expectantly for her reaction.

“I don’t think that’ll be necessary,” she stuttered, trying in vain to remain calm and collected as he started to untie the sash about his waist holding his robe closed. He let it fall to the ground and the robe opened, revealing his chest and torso in all its naked glory.

And it was indeed glorious.

She quickly averted her glance, whipping her head around and staring attentively at the painting on the wall.

“Is something the matter, Mrs. Turner?”

She was not about to play this game. She didn’t have the time, and he didn’t deserve the enjoyment it would undoubtedly bring him to see her suffer so. And most importantly, she couldn’t play because she knew good and well that she had no chance of winning.

She lowered the hood of the cloak and he knew immediately. Only Lilly could make his mouth go dry with a mere glance.

“This is charming,” she said, walking about the perimeter. She took a closer look at the book shelf, examining its contents, unabashedly exploring the room.

He felt an irrepressible smile start to creep up his face. “Charming? That’s a bit of a stretch, isn’t it?”

She smiled back, instantly brightening the dreary room. “No, I truly mean it. It’s small, but it’s cozy. You don’t really need anything more than this.” She picked up one of his books off the short bookshelf standing in the sitting area. “I sometimes think our home is too big. There’s so many rooms, often times I have trouble finding the person I’m looking for in a timely manner. But this ... I would always know.”

Will’s heart was pounding so hard, it felt as if it were trying to fight its way out of his chest. Forced to reside in places like this one, he would often fantasize over how wonderful it would be to be back at Colton Manor again—room upon room of gratuitous excess. But now, he finally saw the benefit to living within such small confines. If Lilly were to join him, he’d always have her within arm’s length, always available to him. He could watch her for hours, admiring that beautiful face, and when he was no longer satisfied with simply watching her, he would make use of their time and explore her body. There would never be an escape available to either one of them, a delightful torture that he’d happily be victim to.

“That reminds me,” he said, sorry to end his fantasy so promptly. “I have something for you.” He went over to the bed and dug around under the mattress for a moment.

“For me?”

He was elated to hear the note of surprise in her voice. Will finally located the sketchbook and handed it to her.

Lilly laughed, a lovely lilting sound that filled the space. “My sketchbook! I can’t believe you found it for me ... again.”

It had been so long since he’d heard such laughter, he couldn’t help but smile. “You left it at the museum that afternoon after your class. I hope you don’t mind, but I took the liberty of looking at some of your drawings. You’re even better than you were.”

“I’m not really.”

“No,” he argued. “You are. You were always far too modest.”

“History certainly does have a way of repeating itself, doesn’t it?” she replied, setting the book down on the nearby table.

Once she’d said the seemingly innocuous words, her mood started to fall. It was a subtle change, but he’d become overtly perceptive where she was concerned and he immediately knew what she was thinking, the questions she was bound to be asking herself.

Will reached out and took her hands into his. “The reason it repeats itself is so that we may learn from our mistakes.” He looked at the small hands he held in his own, delicate bones, skin the color of cream. “I’ve already learned from mine.”

READ THE GUEST BLOG

I’ve been an avid reader since childhood. My mother had shelves lined with books from Louis L’ Amour, Judith Krantz, Judith Michael, and Kathleen Woodiwiss. I consider myself fortunate to have been raised by a woman who valued reading. Today, I encourage my own children to read. Both have shelves and stacks of books, as well as e-readers. I’m a sucker when it comes to buying them books – if they want one, I let them have it.

I actually keep a book journal – something I started in high school. There, I record the titles and authors of all the books I read, with the exception of e-books. I consider my Kindle to be enough of a record already not to necessitate all that rework.

As difficult as this was, I’ve somehow been able to come up with a list of my top ten favorite books. They are in no specific order, and are likely to change the day after this post goes live.

1. Paradise by Judith McNaught – I reread this one at least once a year. It has everything one could wish for in a romance. My tastes have always leaned toward historical romance, but this contemporary gave me everything and more. Poor boy meets rich girl, boy loses girl by horrible misunderstanding by evil father, girl and boy meet years later while she’s engaged and he’s rich and powerful. I can’t put it down once I start reading.

2. The Complete Works of Oscar Wilde – This collection of Wilde’s work gives me everything from his poetry to his essays, as well as his novel – The Picture of Dorian Gray. I started reading Wilde in high school and I’ve always enjoyed his poetry. I find him to be incredibly witty, and a bit snarky – my favorite qualities in a writer.

3. A Rose in Winter by Kathleen Woodiwiss – This beauty and the beast story turns out not to be. The hero in this is cocky, self-assured, and could easily seduce any woman – my perfect idea of a book boyfriend. Woodiwiss was a gifted writer and keeps me reading and interested for hundreds and hundreds of pages (her books are pretty long).

4. Perfect by Judith McNaught – I hate being unoriginal, but I love this author. Perfect is another contemporary featuring a small town girl and rich and hunky actor on the run. It’s actually a little more suspenseful that I’m used to in a romance novel, but it moves me to tears. Actual tears.

5. Goddess of the Hunt by Tessa Dare – This book introduced me to Tessa Dare, and I can safely say I’ve been hooked ever since. She’s a hilarious author and her books keep me laughing.

6. Smooth Talking Stranger by Lisa Kleypas – My aunts Robin and Judy referred me to this book. They said it was “comforting”, one of those books you go to after you’ve had a bad day. They were right. This book is like chicken and noodles – comfort food for the soul. It’s a tender story with sexual tension, hot love scenes, and makes me say “awww” every time.

7. If I Were You by Lisa Renee Jones – Part of her Inside Out Trilogy, this book introduces Chris Merit – the sexiest book boyfriend out there. He’s a tortured artist on a motorcycle – need I say more?

8. How the Marquess was Won by Julie Anne Long – This is another in the Pennyroyal Green series, even though it deviates from the others in that the H and h are not actually Redmond’s or Eversea’s. Julie Anne Long is another one of those authors who writes historical romance that could easily be rewritten as a contemporary and uses humor well.

9. The Crucible by Arthur Miller – Technically, a play. I think this is one of those high school required readings that’s a rite of passage, much like Catcher in the Rye. I get so excited when I read it and the characters are written so well. I’ve never seen it performed on stage, but I’m so happy with just reading it straight through, I can’t imagine liking it anymore than I already do.

10. Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell – I read this at a pretty young age, but it wasn’t until I learned more about the author herself that I truly appreciated the book. There are pieces of her scattered throughout that book, and it’s fascinating to find them.

READ THE BLURB

Ambrosia Tisdale is the very picture of propriety and the epitome of what a respectable young lady should be. Haunted by a memory and compelled by her family, she pursues perfection to a fault.

The Earl of Bristol, Duncan Maddox, has returned to London after years of familial imposed exile. As the second son, he has led a life filled with frivolity, leisure, and a healthy dose of debauchery. Now his older brother has died, leaving the family’s flailing legacy in Duncan’s unwilling arms.

At the behest of his uncle, Duncan is advised to do the one thing that could provide instant fortune and respectability – he must marry. But there is only one prospect who meets the unique requirements to solve all the Earl’s problems – the lovely Miss Ambrosia Tisdale. But securing the prudent daughter of a Viscount’s hand proves to be more challenging than this scandal ridden second son of an Earl has bargained for.

With scandal, extortion, treachery, and even love itself threatening to keep him from his goal, will Duncan succeed in compromising Miss Tisdale?

READ AN EXCERPT

Duncan spun her around the room with a grace that was unprecedented, despite her extensive experience. She was suddenly very aware of her own awkward steps. Ambrosia raised her eyes to look into his, taking note of just how many lines crinkled at the corners when he smiled – which was often. He smiled much like her sister Tamsin – unadulterated, as if no care in the world can dampen their spirits. She was often jealous of her sister’s easy joy, but as she basked under the light of his, she too felt a bit more carefree.

And that was what attracted her to this wicked man - the expectations of society, of her family, and herself were made lighter by proxy.

The music coming from the orchestra drowned out the other couples and the spinning made her feel as if she were in some sort of inebriated state, despite only indulging in only two cups of ratafia. Ambrosia was by no means a dainty woman, but in his arms she felt as if she were light as air.

Duncan appeared cheerful, but not nearly as heady as she felt. “I hope you find my dancing agreeable. It is somewhat an area of pride for me. When I was younger, my uncle insisted I learn to dance well, and years later I am eternally grateful for the skill. In fact, I’ve been told many times that it is certainly the best thing I do . . . on two feet.” The gold flecks in his eyes flashed with the wicked innuendo of his statement.
